Michael Jackson Manslaughter Trial Begins
Randy and Janet Jackson enter the Los Angeles Courthouse on Tuesday
Photo: Frederick M. Brown/ Getty Images
More than two years after Michael Jackson's death, the manslaughter trial of his personal physician, Dr. Conrad Murray, opened in a Los Angeles courtroom Tuesday (September 27).
In addition to laying out story lines the prosecution and defense teams will follow, the trial quickly provided a shocking opening chapter when prosecutor David Walgren kicked off the proceedings by showing a previously unseen, graphic image of the 50-year-old pop icon's body on a hospital gurney following his death.
According to TMZ, Walgren meticulously set out the people's case against Murray, a cardiologist who was hired by Jackson to be his personal physician in the lead-up to the "Thriller" singer's planned 50-show This Is It comeback attempt.
Walgren told the just-seated jury that Jackson put "misplaced trust" in Murray's medical skills and that the prosecution planned to show that Murray repeatedly acted with gross negligence and incompetence. He pinned the cause of death as an overdose of the powerful surgical anesthetic propofol, which he claimed was administered by Murray, who had made arrangements with a pharmacy to purchase very large quantities of the drug that chronic insomniac Jackson allegedly used to get to sleep.
In addition, Walgren said more than a month before Jackson's death, the doctor made a voice recording on his iPhone in which Jackson, heavily slurring his words, is clearly under the influence of "unknown agents," which he said proved Murray knew the star's state and what the drugs were doing to his client.
Jackson was described as cold, shivering and rambling in the weeks before his death, but Walgren said the doctor continued to give him propofol and, when Jackson was clearly struggling in his final moments, he said Murray instructed a bodyguard to hide evidence in a blue bag, including bottles of propofol. He also noted that Murray never told paramedics or doctors at UCLA hospital that he'd given Jackson propofol.
Murray, who was working on a $150,000 a month retainer, faces four years in prison and the loss of his medical license if found guilty.
Defense attorney Ed Chernoff countered by telling the jury that Jackson caused his own death by swallowing eight 2mg pills of the anti-anxiety drug Lorazepam, as well as injecting himself with a dose of propofol that instantly killed him. He said Jackson's struggles with prescription-drug abuse were so acute that no amount of determination or talent — and not even the biggest tour payday of his life — could help him mount the This Is It tour without some help.
"He died rapidly, so instantly he didn't even have time to close his eyes," Chernoff said of Jackson's quick demise from the alleged combination of tranquilizers and propofol taken without Murray's knowledge.
Chernoff also claimed that Jackson went "doctor shopping," promised to put some of Murray's former patients on the stand to show his skills and compassion as a physician (which caused Murray to tear up at one point) and said his client was not aware of how acute Jackson's issues were when he took the gig. In fact, Chernoff said, Jackson didn't have insomnia, but suffered from an "absolute, total and thorough inability to sleep."
After hiring him, Jackson allegedly told Murray he would use propofol with or without him, and in the two months that he administered the drug to the singer, Chernoff said Murray observed Jackson sleeping, waking up and living his life, which suggested to the cardiologist that it was not negligent to administer the drug to his patient.
The defense attorney also claimed Murray was trying to wean Jackson off the dangerous drug, a tactic that seemed to be working in the nights before June 25. But after an emergency meeting June 20, during which the show's promoter threatened to pull the plug on the tour if Jackson did not get his health in order, Jackson begged Murray to continue giving him the anesthetic so he could get much-needed sleep.
As he has claimed all along, Chernoff said Murray gave Jackson a small dose of propofol just before the pop star died, but not enough to kill him, suggesting that Jackson — who knew exactly how to administer the drug — shot himself up with the fatal dose. Murray pleaded not guilty to involuntary manslaughter.
Testimony in the proceedings — which are being televised and webcast — was expected to begin later in the day with Jackson's choreographer and friend, Kenny Ortega. Among those attending the first day of the trial were Jackson's father and mother, Joseph and Katherine Jackson, as well as siblings Janet, Jermaine, Randy, Tito and LaToya.

People vs. Dr. Conrad Murray -- AEG Attorney Kathy Jorrie Testimony
Kathy Jorrie -- AEG Attorney TestifiesUpdated 9/28/11 at 9:15 AM
AEG attorney Kathy Jorrie took the stand this morning -- describing the contract she drafted between AEG, Dr. Murray, and Michael Jackson.According to Jorrie, Murray had a laundry list of demands -- including $150,000 a month, even while "This Is It" was on hiatus.Jorrie testified, Murray also demanded a CPR machine for MJ while he performed in London.Jorrie claimed, when she asked Murray why he would need a CPR machine... Murray responded, he didn't want to take chances with MJ's age and the strenuous nature of the show.* Jorrie says she spoke to Murray on June 24th. Murray told her he had seen Michael perform and that he was in "perfect health." This was a day before he died.* She also said the contract was never signed by all parties, and no payment was ever made to Murray by AEG.

Adele, Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber Land New Guinness Records
Lady Gaga
Photo: Getty Images
Adele has been on a record-setting tear all year and now the British songbird can claim to be a "Guinness Book of World Records" champ. The upcoming 2012 edition of the book reveals that the "Rolling in the Deep" singer is in good company, as Lady Gaga, Rihanna, Willow Smith and Justin Bieber also set some high-water marks over the past 12 months.
Adele can count three records, including first female to land two singles and two albums in the U.K. top five simultaneously — which only the Beatles had achieved before in 1963. Her breakthrough second CD, 21, claimed the record as the first album in U.K. chart history to sell 3 million copies in one calendar year.
She also logged the most consecutive weeks with the #1 album in the U.K. for a solo female with 11 weeks at the top — beating a record previously held by Madonna's The Immaculate Collection — and most cumulative weeks with a U.K. #1 for a solo female (18), beating out both Alanis Morissette and Shania Twain, who shared the previous record at 11 weeks.
Lady Gaga's social media predominance was rewarded, landing her the Most Followers on Twitter crown with 11,259,372 as of June 29 (she's currently at 13,469,754). In addition, "Poker Face" was honored for Most Weeks on U.S. Digital Hot Songs chart at 83 weeks. Gaga made the book last year for having the most consecutive weeks on the U.K. chart and being the most searched-for woman on the Internet.
Some other new records:
Justin Bieber: The singer's "Baby" was dubbed the Most Popular Video of Any Kind Online, thanks to 463,820,304 views as of February 16, 2011.
The Black Eyed Peas: The Biggest Selling Download in the U.K. is "I Gotta Feeling," the first-ever track to go over 1 million downloads in England.
J.K. Rowling: The "Harry Potter" author is lauded for being the First Billionaire Author thanks to sales of more than 400 million copies of the books worldwide.
"Glee": The hit show scored the Most Hit Singles in a Calendar Year with 48 making it into the U.K. top 75 in 2011, breaking their previous record of 45 hits in 2010.
Rihanna: First Female to have U.K. #1 singles in five consecutive years (2007-2011), from "Rude Boy" to her most recent, "Only Girl (In the World)." Only Elvis and the Beatles have had more U.K. #1 singles in consecutive years.
Willow Smith: The Youngest Transatlantic Top 20 Artist, thanks to "Whip My Hair" hitting the top 20 when she was only 10 years old.
Lil Wayne: Most U.S. Hot 100 Hits by a Rap Artist with 64 between 1999 and 2010.
U2: Highest Grossing Music Tour for the 360 outing, which by April 2011 had raked in more than $539 million for 110 shows between July 2009 and July 2011.

Lady Gaga Goes Topless In Latest 'You And I' Fashion Film
Lady Gaga

Two down, four more to go. On Tuesday night, Lady Gaga tweeted out her latest "Yoü and I" fashion film. After portraying "Nymph" in the first one, Gaga portrays the black-clad Bride in the latest installment, which she tweeted out to her Little Monsters.
The Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin-directed clip features Gaga wearing her outfit from the opening scenes of the proper "Yoü and I" video in which she stands at the cornfield crossroads.
During the two-minute, 28-second clip, Gaga dances around in her black chiffon outfit, slowly stripping away her blond wig and couture. By the end, she's topless, with her hands covering her breasts. Some of Gaga's monsters and pals make an appearance in the video as well, including blink-and-miss-it appearances from her video co-star "Vampire Diaries" actor Taylor Kinney and her stylist Nicola Formichetti.
The black-and-white clip also has funny, kitschy moments showing Gaga smiling, laughing and making funny faces for the camera. The videos were shot while Mother Monster and her entire Haus were in Nebraska earlier this summer working on the Laurieann Gibson-directed clip.
Each of the six films will focus on one of Gaga's characters in the original video, which includes her mermaid incarnation, Yuyi and her male alter ego, Jo Calderone. "We built a studio in a pigsty and worked for three days with her constantly coming off set to us and filming with us and taking pictures," Inez told MTV News. "What's incredible in there is that this is Gaga as herself, in the character that she is, related to the 'Yoü and I' video, and it's purely her."

Beyonce Says Shopping For Maternity Clothes 'So Much Fun'
Beyoncé
Photo: MTV
Beyoncé hit up London Fashion Week this past weekend to launch the latest House of Deréon line. The line was described as "global nomad," and according to B, anyone — even pregnant ladies like herself — can wear the clothes.
"What I'm wearing today is part of the collection and it's not supposed to be, but it actually is really good for ... maternity," the singer, dressed in a sparkly black pantsuit, told CNN.
B explained that she and her mom, Tina Knowles, started working on the line at least six months before her pregnancy, so they hadn't planned maternity clothes specifically. "But we do have some things that I am still trying to rock," she admitted.
"Actually, I am having so much fun, it has been the most fun time now that [my pregnancy] has been announced and I don't have to, you know, it was really difficult to conceal," she continued. "But now that I can be proud and excited about it, I'm having so much fun shopping. It's great."
Beyoncé has always been a trendsetter in the world of fashion, and that isn't going to change just because she's going to be a mom. "I just feel like it is often within," she said. "My mother has always told me that beauty comes from within and what's exciting about being a woman is you can say, 'Today ... I feel really conservative, today I'm feeling classy. Today, I am going on a date and I want to just be a showstopper.' And you know there is this variety of beautiful clothes that can bring out whatever you feel inside," she added. "But it comes from here and you should wear your clothes, they shouldn't wear you."
The singer also shared that she isn't sure whether to buy pink or blue clothes as she doesn't know the baby's gender yet. Her mom, however, is just happy about the news. "I am so delighted. I'm over the moon," she gushed.

Mac Miller Takes Over NYC With Sold-Out Show
Mac Miller
Photo: MTV News
NEW YORK — What a difference a year makes. Last year Mac Miller hit the intimate S.O.B.'s to perform his first show in the city, but on Thursday night, the Pittsburgh rap phenomenon returned to the much-larger Irving Plaza to begin his Blue Slide Park Tour before a sold-out crowd.
"The transition is crazy, like seeing how things build," Mac told MTV News just hours before taking the stage on Thursday. "In New York, in S.O.B.'s, I was freaking out about that, man. I was like, 'Man, there all these people here for me.' So to come and sell out Irving Plaza real quick is great, man. That's why I do what I do — to keep on growing and building."
The young energetic crowd of teens and 20-somethings, who were mostly dressed in Miller's "Most Dope" T-shirts, welcomed the opening acts, but as the clock ticked, they grew impatient. With the stage lights dark, the throng of supporters held their thumbs up (a hand signal Mac Miller and his fans share in a sign of solidarity) and began to chant "Mac, Mac, Mac, Mac." Finally, at 9:22 p.m. ET, the charismatic rhyme dealer emerged onstage from a cloud of smoke. Miller began rapping as the tinkling from his "Best Day Ever" track filled the concert hall.
"I never take a day off/ Work around the clock my engineer getting paid off," he rapped, taking center stage in a New York Yankees snapback and a blue zip-up hoodie.
The stage design matched Miller's Blue Slide Park album theme. There were street lights, a park bench and Mac's DJ's booth was set up to look like an ice-cream cart. Performing fan favorites from his K.I.D.S. and Best Day Ever mixtapes, Mac breezed through songs like "Get Up," the Al B. Sure-sampling "Ride Around" and "Senior Skip Day." When the Empire of the Sun-tinged "The Spins" dropped, Mac didn't have to say a word as the crowd performed the song's opening lyrics for him. "Wanna get a mansion, a Jacuzzi, a theater to watch my movies," recited concertgoers from the front to the back of the venue as the 19-year-old MC sported a Kool-Aid smile.
With the crowd eating out of the palm of his hand, MM turned from rapper to rock star when he pulled out a white guitar for the mellowed-out "Another Night Alone," which he strummed onstage for the first time ever, much to the crowd's delight. At the end of the song, Miller screamed proudly, "Yeah mother----er, I play guitar and sh-- too."
Tracks like "In the Air," "Good Evening" and "All Around the World" brought the energy back up as fanatics bounced up and down with their hands waving in the air. There were also dedications to his deceased grandfather ("Poppy") and his mother, who was in attendance ("I'll Be There"), but the biggest thrill came at the end. After performing the rambunctious "Knock, Knock," Mac abruptly left the stage only to re-emerge for an encore. And the hook to the set-ending "Donald Trump" couldn't have been more fitting. "We gonna take over the world, while these haters get mad," Mac Miller sang.
Maybe he hasn't taken over the world just yet, but last night Mac certainly conquered NYC!

Michael Jackson Family Announces Tribute Concert
Siblings LaToya, Tito, Jackie and Marlon Jackson after announcing 'Michael Forever,' in Beverly Hills July 25, 2011.
Photo: AFP/Getty Images
Michael Jackson's family has announced a tribute concert to the late King of Pop that is slated to take place on October 8 in Cardiff, Wales. The four-hour show at the 75,000-capacity Millennium Stadium will be broadcast via satellite on pay-per-view and into movie theaters with a cast of big-name performers whose identities have not yet been revealed.
At the Beverly Hills press conference on Monday revealing the details of the "Michael Forever" show, Jackson family matriarch Katherine was joined by sons Tito, Jackie and Marlon and daughter LaToya; siblings Jermaine, Randy, Janet and estranged husband Joe were not in attendance.
"When I was told some of the names of the artists performing, I knew it would be fit for a king. If my son was here today he would feel the same way, and so I'd like to say thank you very much for helping to keep my son's legacy alive," Katherine Jackson said of Michael, who died in June 2009 of a heart attack caused by a prescription drug overdose.
According to Wales Online, the show will feature artists Jackson admired and will celebrate the 40th anniversary of the start of his solo career.
"I will be there along with as many members of my family that can make it," Katherine said. "It is intended to be the biggest and best concert in the world for many years to come." LaToya added, "This event is far, far overdue. He was an entertainer who I feel no one can ever stand up to or hold a candle to as far as his talent is concerned. This tribute will be something spectacular and I know that he would approve."
One of the show's producers said that despite taking place in a large stadium, the event will have a more intimate atmosphere with the building's roof closed. Proceeds from the show will benefit three charities Jackson supported: the Prince's Trust, AIDS Project Los Angeles and a cancer charity. The show's lineup will be announced on August 3.
As with many things related to MJ's legacy, there was controversy, as brothers Randy and Jermaine said they thought the timing of the show was inappropriate. In a statement, the two said, "While we wholeheartedly support the spirit of a tribute that honors our brother, we find it impossible to support an event that is due to take place during the criminal trial surrounding Michael's death. As everyone knows, those proceedings commence September 20."
That date is when Jackson's former doctor, Conrad Murray, is slated to go on trial for manslaughter charges in the singer's death.
Jermaine attempted to put on a tribute concert to his late brother in September 2009, but the show fell apart after many of the top acts were unable to commit to the event.

'X Factor' -- Parents Org to File FCC Complaint Over Dong-Exposing Contestant
"X Factor" ... more like XXX Factor ... if you ask the Parents Television Council -- which is now promising to file a formal indecency complaint with the FCC over the contestant who dropped trou on stage last night. In case you missed it -- a wannabe singer named Geo Godley whipped out his junk in the middle of his performance on the show ... and it all aired on X Factor. Producers added a graphic to cover the guy's man zone. But PTC President Tim Winter is furious ... saying, "If Godley performed his act in public, he would have been arrested. But
if he performs it in front of a Fox camera, his act is beamed via the
public airwaves into every home in the nation."He adds, "The prolonged, previously videotaped footage of a contestant dancing
nude on the ‘X Factor’ stage represents a conscious decision by the
producers – with the approval of the network’s broadcast standards
department – to intentionally air this content in front of millions of
families during hours when they knew full well that children would be
watching."
“Families were led to believe the ‘X Factor’ would be family-friendly
programming and instead were assaulted by graphic nudity."
"And while we understand the
entertainment hook that comes from the occasional train wreck, something
so inherently and patently offensive as this obscene performance is
more than a sucker punch; it is a violation of Fox station’s broadcast
licenses."“Finally, the fact that Fox assigned a content rating of TV-PG DL for a
naked man frolicking around on a stage is not just inaccurate, it is
fraudulent. We call on the amorphous Content Ratings Review Board to
immediately investigate this incident and hold Fox accountable for
violating the spirit and the letter of the content ratings system, which
can only be described at this point as rigged and blatantly
inaccurate."

Ryan Seacrest 'Not Worried' About 'Idol,' 'X Factor' Fatigue
Ryan Seacrest
Photo: MTV News
On Wednesday night, Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul and the rest of the "X Factor" gang kicked off the show on American TV.
It's the latest (and perhaps one of the most high-profile) addition to a television market already full of singing competition series.
While both shows air on Fox, "Factor" doesn't directly compete with Cowell and Abdul's old "American Idol" stomping grounds, but it does raise a question: Will TV viewers have singing fatigue by the time "Idol" kicks off next year?
When MTV News caught up with host Ryan Seacrest at "Idol" auditions in New Jersey on Thursday (September 22), he said he wasn't concerned about that at all.
"I'm not worried about audiences being burnt out," Seacrest told us as he made his way to meet with contestants. "I think that all of these shows are great for the music business and they're great for people who want to make it in the music business. The more opportunity, the more shots, the more chances dreams come true, right?"
Just as "X factor" wraps things up in December, "Idol" will be gearing up for a January kickoff. But Ryan insisted to reporters that things are "friendly" between the two shows, even revealing that he has spoken to "Factor" host Steve Jones. "I didn't give him tips; he's done this for a long time. I had a chance to meet him not too long ago and he was very, very kind and very nice and I wish him the best of luck," he said. "I think he'll enjoy his time with Simon. I had a decade with him. I think it's time for him to endure Simon."
In addition to all of the "Factor" chatter, Seacrest gushed about the talent "Idol" has seen for the upcoming season. "Good. So far, so good. I have no idea what they sound like yet [today], but they look like they have potential, don't they?" he said. "We've had a really good run so far with auditions. It's been very, very impressive. The contestants have been very, very good."

On Tuesday, Justin Bieber had this message for fans eagerly awaiting some new music from the teen star: "oh yeah ... and i think LESS THAN A MONTH ... I'm gonna give you some #newmusic." Bieber is busy in the studio locking down features for his forthcoming Christmas album.
With rumored collaborations with Sean Kingston and Taylor Swift, as well as a confirmed track, "Falalalala," with Boyz II Men, Bieber is hustling to get the album done.
"He thought we'd be perfect for it," Boyz II Men's Shawn Stockman said of their work with the star. "And we went in and locked in."
On Wednesday, Bieber not only confirmed another guest for the album, the Band Perry, but also teased a secret one. "@thebandperry heard the final version of our song for the Christmas album!! Love it. glad to have you!" he wrote, before going back and forth with his manager, Scooter Braun, about that other feature.
"Wow. Just got an #epic phone call regarding @justinbieber xmas album. 1 of the most #Legendary performers ever is joining the album!!" Braun tweeted.
Bieber responded, "@scooterbraun cant believe it ... completely #HONORED. I think people are going to be shocked. I was. #christmas."
In addition to all the feature updates, Bieber revealed, "working hard on this #SOMEDAY shoot. they are playing my first single from the christmas album. what is the name of it again .... hmmmm ....."
Bieber apparently also has something big in store for fans this week. Braun only had this to say about it: "kinda hyped right now .... @justinbieber has something pretty wild in store for this week. #remix."

Brad Pitt Relates To 'David Vs. Goliath' Story In 'Moneyball'
Brad Pitt and Jonah Hill in "Moneyball"
Photo: Columbia Pictures
You'd think it's been a while since Brad Pitt felt anything like an underdog, since those days in the late '80s when he was pumped just to get a few lines in a TV show like "21 Jump Street" or had to console himself with work as an extra next to then-hot shots like Andrew McCarthy and Jami Gertz. These days, he's Brad Pitt: Oscar nominee, beloved of Angelina Jolie and ... freaking Brad Pitt.
But as the actor admitted to MTV News at the Toronto International Film Festival, there are still times when he feels like the world is against him, when he finds himself in a similar situation to the 2002 Oakland Athletics, the small-market Major League Baseball club at the center of his new movie, "Moneyball."
"I certainly feel injustice," he said. "I'm no foreigner to that, whether it's real or perceived."
Unjust is certainly the situation the A's find themselves in the film, which is based on the best-selling nonfiction title by Michael Lewis and which hits theaters September 23. The team had a vastly smaller payroll than other teams but nonetheless was able to rise to the top when general manager Billy Beane (Pitt) employed a newfangled, statistics-based approach to building his roster of players.
"These are guys that are working in an unfair game," Pitt explained. "They are a team with no money trying to fight — it's David vs. Goliath. How are they going to be competitive? How are they going to stand a chance? They can't fight the other guys' fight; they're going to lose every time. These guys had to rethink it and rethink what they were doing.
"They're Galileo, in a sense, going up against an institution that is not going to be very happy about them questioning their norms," he added.

Janet Jackson Thrills Fans With Greatest Hits, Michael Tribute At Radio City
Janet Jackson (file)
Photo: Christopher Polk/ Getty Images
NEW YORK — Often imitated, never duplicated, Janet Jackson's outbursts of meticulous choreography, sassy exclamations and smoldering gazes into the audience kept them on their feet for the entire two-hour set of her greatest hits at Radio City Music Hall. Monday night marked the last of three sold-out shows at the historic venue on her monumental Number Ones: Up Close and Personal Tour.
Up-and-coming boy band Mindless Behavior opened the show with songs including "#1 Girl," "Future" and their debut single, "My Girl." With their Usher-esque dance moves and shouts like "Where the ladies at?" the boys brought the tween girls out of hiding, judging by the shrill screams escaping various corner of the music hall.
At 9:00 sharp, the lights went down and Janet's fans were on the edge of their seats, watching music videos for "The Best Things in Life Are Free" and "Rhythm Nation" projected on big screens across the venue. A small shadow drifted toward center stage, and when the colorful lights came up, Jackson, wrapped in a shoulder-padded catsuit, complete with slick short hair, blasted into "The Pleasure Principle," dancing as hard and intensely choreographed as she did when the song first came out in the 1980s.
With barely a spare second between songs, Janet dazzled her way through her biggest hits, including "Miss You Much," "All for You" and "Nasty," and more recent hits like 2008's "Feedback."
Videos displayed during Jackson's costume changes included vintage clips from "Diff'rent Strokes," a funny scene from "Poetic Justice" where Jackson slyly rejects the advances of Tupac Shakur's character, and a rather heavy scene, as Jackson's character in "Why Did I Get Married" destroys her husband's house with a golf club, screaming hysterically.
Considering the tough couple of years the Jackson family has faced, the dark moments in the video seemed fitting, and everyone was beside themselves with bittersweet joy when Michael Jackson's face popped up on the big screen and she performed their hit single "Scream."
Janet emerged for her encore in a tight white one-piece disco suit, and performed "Diamonds," "Make Me" and "Together Again," which appeared to be the biggest hit of the evening. As Jackson graciously bowed out, her straight face transitioned into a smirk, suggesting that despite the hard times she has experienced recently, we can expect to see this singing and dancing pop legend shine far into the future.
"Its amazing!" Janet fan Elena Mercantini gleamed afterward. "It's like she's still 20 years old!"
"She's hot, she's amazing and she's still got it after all these years" added Alison Klinger of Long Island. "Best concert I've ever been to!"

Adam Lambert's 'Whole Lotta Love': The Story Behind The Cover
Adam Lambert performs "Whole Lotta Love" on "American Idol" on Tuesday
Photo: R. Mickshaw/Getty Images/ Fox
Imagine a freight train speeding toward you at midnight. Or a rockslide barreling down a hill as you try to outrace it. That's the feeling of the ominous, chugging Jimmy Page riff that kicks off Led Zeppelin's 1970 Stonehenge of rock, "Whole Lotta Love." And that's before singer Robert Plant leans into one of the nastiest, ecstatic rock screams this side of the Who's "Won't Get Fooled Again."
That's the song Adam Lambert chose to sing on "American Idol" rock night Tuesday (May 5), and, needless to say, it was a challenge that the eyeliner-loving Los Angeles stage veteran was more than up for, hitting a series of high notes and rock screams that would have made Plant proud. It was a risky maneuver that paid off for Lambert, who chose a tune that came in at #75 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the "500 Greatest Songs of All Time" in 2004.
The legendary British rock act recorded the tribute to Chicago blues icon Willie Dixon during their second U.S. tour after working it out in their live show, including it on their 1969 classic album Led Zeppelin II. Like many of the songs Zeppelin performed early in their career, "Love" was a blues standard turned on its head with a heavy dose of crunching psychedelic guitar and thundering drums, courtesy of late drummer John Bonham. The song was based on a 1962 tune by another blues forefather, Muddy Waters, called "You Need Love," which was penned by Dixon.
For Zeppelin's version, Plant customized the lyrics by adding some lyrical quotes from a few other songs Dixon wrote for Howlin' Wolf, "Back Door Man" and "Shake For Me," nailing the tricky vocal in a single take. It was also inspired by 1966's "You Need Loving" from the British rock group the Small Faces, for whom Zeppelin had great affection, but they also did not credit Dixon for his part in writing the original lyrics. The song became Zeppelin's first U.S. single and their only U.S. top 10 hit. Though their manager would not let them release singles in the U.K. because he thought it cannibalized album sales, the song was finally released as the band's only British single in 1997.
Dixon sued Zeppelin over the song in 1985, claiming it borrowed too heavily from his "You Need Love," and Zeppelin reached an agreement with him, with Dixon using the money he received to set up a program that provided musical instruments for schools. A cornerstone of heavy rock, the tune -- which was the theme song for the long-running British countdown show "Top of the Pops" in the 1970s and '80s -- has been covered by dozens of artists over the years, from Tina Turner and Ben Harper to Prince, Slash, Leona Lewis, Train's Pat Monahan, the London Symphony Orchestra and Jane's Addiction.

Chris Cornell Filling In For Robert Plant On Led Zeppelin Tour? That's News To Him
Chris Cornell
Photo: MTV News
Former Soundgarden and Audioslave frontman Chris Cornell has spoken out for the first time about rumors that he's been asked to fill in for Robert Plant on a proposed Led Zeppelin reunion tour. The trek would feature original guitarist Jimmy Page, original bassist John Paul Jones and Jason Bonham taking over on drums for his late father, John Bonham.
Cornell has been mentioned — along with Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl, former Van Halen frontman Sammy Hagar, White Stripes mastermind Jack White and Alter Bridge's Myles Kennedy — as a potential Plant fill-in. Plant has already said that he wouldn't take part in the tour.
"I have not been approached so far to fill in for Robert Plant on the upcoming Zeppelin tour, but that isn't to say I won't be," Cornell told MTV News. "I've heard that from about 200 people now, and it might be one of those situations where it's just an online rumor or it might be true. But if you see anyone from Led Zeppelin around, let me know. I think I should actually fill in for Jimmy Page on the Robert Plant/ Alison Krauss tour."
Cornell's denial comes just a day after Aerosmith guitarist Brad Whitford confirmed reports that frontman Steven Tyler recently met with Zeppelin for an impromptu jam session. "They did it for fun," Whitford said during an appearance on the syndicated show "Todd N Tyler Radio Empire." "I actually think Jimmy wanted Steven to come over and play a little bit because I think he was trying to light a fire under Robert."
Rumors of a Zeppelin reunion tour have abounded since the iconic band played a single reunion set last year at London's O2 Arena. Twisted Sister frontman Dee Snider added fuel to the fire last month when he revealed that the group was thinking of touring, with or without Plant.
According to Snider, the rest of the band told Plant, " 'We're all rehearsed, we're ready to go. Here's a gazillion dollars on the table. If you don't do it, we're going out with this kid [Myles Kennedy].' "
"And he can sing the sh-- out of Zeppelin," Snider added. "They're going to hope that Robert, at the last minute, will go, 'OK,' and step in."
In a recent interview, Jones told BBC Radio Devon that a new singer was being sought to take over for Plant. "We are trying out a couple of singers," he said. "We want to do it. It's sounding great, and we want to get on and get out there."
But Jones insists that he, Page and Bonham aren't interested in finding a Plant clone. "It's got to be right," he said. "There's no point in just finding another Robert. You could get that out of a tribute band, but we don't want to be our own tribute band. There would be a record and a tour, but everyone has to be onboard."
Of course, even if Zeppelin were to approach him, Cornell might be too busy to take over vocals for the band. His upcoming Timbaland-produced solo LP, Scream, will be released within the next few months. Cornell told MTV News last month that some of his fans might consider Scream something of a departure, but he doesn't see it that way.
"It makes me happy that there's this perception that I have a group of fans that I'm now sort of throwing a curve at and what their reaction will be," he said. "But I've been in this situation so many times already. When I put out [1999's] Euphoria Morning, my main goal was to create an album that sounded like nothing I'd done in Soundgarden, and I did that. I also had that with Temple of the Dog, where I showed up with songs that weren't necessarily riff-based. And then, of course, the pairing of me and members of Rage Against the Machine had everyone sort of speculating about what that would sound like.
"It feels like I've done this so many times that when it's presented to me as being a departure, I feel that's a misconception," he added. "I feel like that's my theme at this point."

'Killer Elite' Is 'More Grown-Up,' Jason Statham Says
Jason Statham
Photo: MTV News
Jason Statham has got nothing against skull-cracking, explosions-for-explosions-sake action flicks. The guy made his name with "The Transporter," after all, and he's getting set for a second go-round opposite Sylvester Stallone in "The Expendables 2."
But "Killer Elite" (September 23), despite a title that suggests it's another in a long line of empty-headed, Statham-starring adventures, is an altogether different creation. Based on a true story that spans the globe from France to Australia, the film stars Statham as an ex-special ops agent on a mission to save his mentor (Robert De Niro), who's being held captive by a secretive military clan and its menacing leader (Clive Owen). There's a grittiness simply not seen in much of Statham's previous work.
"This is something I've been wanting to do for a long time," Statham told MTV News at the Toronto International Film Festival. "This is a thinking man's action movie. It's a bit more grown-up than things in the past I've done. In order to do movies like this, I have to go through and do a few of those as well. There's a lot more going on."
That extends from the words on the page to the guy behind the camera to the dudes mixing it up with Statham when writer/director Gary McKendry yells, "Action!"
"The quality of the script, the quality of the filmmaker — those are two elements that attract living legends like Bob De Niro and Clive Owen," Statham said. "Once I start boxing around with those two, the whole quality of what we're doing changes. It's a big step up."
Check out everything we've got on "Killer Elite."
