Justin Bieber Doing 'Great' In New York City
Justin Bieber
Photo: Getty Images
NEW YORK — Justin Bieber is a busy guy these days. He's been all over the Big Apple spreading the word about his new album, Under the Mistletoe, and continuing his work with various charitable organizations.
On Thursday night, Bieber attended a gala held in his honor for his work with the Pencils of Promise organization. Started by Adam Braun, his manager Scooter's brother, the organization builds schools for children across the world, helping bring education to places that might otherwise not have access to it.
"Tonight's event is very special because I got these two gentlemen here, but it's really great to be here. Basically we're being honored. He's honoring us, which is spectacular," Bieber told reporters, before Scooter chimed in, "You know what's great is it's honoring the whole organization and all their work, so it's great to be here."
The pop star has been one of the organization's most prominent supporters, and he shared his enthusiasm for the charity at the event. "It feels great," he told MTV News on the red carpet outside of Espace, where the gala was being held. "It's been great just to be here and be honored. It feels very great. I'm here for this guy [Adam Braun] and for all the people working really hard at Pencils of Promise."
These days, Bieber's been making all types of headlines, including those regarding a highly publicized paternity suit. But he seems to be handling it all in stride, shrugging off the rumors. "It hasn't been really crazy at all," he said.

Lady Gaga, Britney, Taylor Swift, Beyonce Drop Concert DVDs
Taylor Swift
Photo: Getty Images
Music fans planning to burn off those post-Thanksgiving calories with some holiday shopping are in luck: Some of pop's biggest divas dropped live DVDs on Monday (November 21): Beyoncé, Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift and Britney Spears all have concert specials out, just in time for your Black Friday wish list. Here, MTV News breaks down the four releases (and one more to watch out for).
Taylor Swift
Just as Taylor wraps up her Speak Now Tour this week, the American Music Award winner is releasing "Speak Now World Tour - Live." The 18-song DVD features Swift performing some of her biggest tracks during that arena-filling trek. And if that's not enough Taylor, there's also a 16-song CD that fans can snatch up.
Beyoncé
Filmed over four shows in New York, weeks before B announced her pregnancy at the VMAs, the "Live at Roseland" DVD special shows the Queen B recounting some of the greatest moments of her career before launching into a nonstop live performance of her 4 album. It also includes behind-the-scenes footage that gives fans their first look at the wedding dress Beyoncé wore the day she married Jay-Z.
Lady Gaga
Lady Gaga is giving her little monsters a front row seat to her epic Monster Ball Tour. Filmed during stops at Madison Square Garden earlier this year, the concert originally aired on HBO and earned the pop star an Emmy. The DVD also includes previously unseen material that didn't make the final cut on HBO. In addition, Gaga is releasing a new album, Born This Way - The Remix, today.
Britney Spears
After debuting her Femme Fatale live concert special on Epix earlier this month, Spears is releasing the spectacle on DVD this week for those who may have missed it. Full of costume changes, swirling dance numbers and a sexy lap dance, this special is perfect for the Brit enthusiast.
One to Pre-Order: Adele
A fifth diva will get into the game on Cyber Monday. On November 28, Adele drops her own concert special, "Live at the Royal Albert Hall." And given that it might be a while before the singer hits the road again (she's on the mend from throat surgery), the DVD will at least give fans a taste of Adele's live stage show.

Lady Gaga And Laurieann Gibson Split: Experts React
Lady Gaga
Photo: WireImage
After spending nearly her entire career working with Laurieann Gibson, Lady Gaga confirmed Monday (November 14) that she and her creative director had decided to part ways.
It was a move that may have been surprising to Gaga's Little Monsters, considering how closely the two have created some of the Mother Monster's most-memorable visuals, but did the split surprise music-industry observers?
"On the one hand, I get why [they split], because it seems like Laurieann's been doing a lot outside of the Gaga universe," Entertainment Weekly's Kyle Anderson told MTV News, referring to Gibson's starring roles on the BET dance-competition show "Born to Dance" and another dance reality series, E!'s "The Dance Scene." "On the other hand, it's a little bit strange, because Gaga's circle of people is so small, and all those people have been with her since pretty much the duration. She's really, really loyal, so it's a little bit strange to me, because I think she has this circle of people she trusts with her work."
Who should be Gaga's next choreographer? Let us know in the Newsroom!
As a key member of the Haus of Gaga, Gibson was never afraid to share her honest opinion about Gaga's work. Most notably, she spoke out publicly against Gaga's Jo Calderone performance at the VMAs, as well as her Nick Knight-directed "Born This Way" clip.
That unbridled honesty could be behind the Gaga/Gibson split, according to Us Weekly senior music editor Ian Drew.
"It's shocking and it's not," Drew told MTV News. "They were extremely close, and she let Laurieann have an unprecedented amount of control in her camp. Let's face it: Laurieann is very headstrong, never holds back what she thinks, and that tends to rub people the wrong way. I'm not totally surprised; it was only a matter of time.
"Look, I love Laurieann, and as a journalist, she's an interviewer's dream, because you'd catch her and she'd always just say what was going on," he added. "Laurieann would just say it. She would give you that perfect sound bite. She tended to be a little bit loose-lipped. But on the other hand, I can see why that maybe ruffled Gaga's feathers, because Gaga's all about the performance piece and not giving away too much. Laurieann really liked to take credit — not that that was bad, [and] maybe it was due, but maybe Gaga didn't want everyone knowing that. In the end, I do tend to think it was something to do with creative differences."
The big question is how the duo's severed partnership will impact Gaga's future endeavors. Will Little Monsters notice Gibson's absence?
"It always puts a really, really heavy focus on whatever the next project is," Anderson explained. "With stars like these, people become curious to know: 'Well how much do these individual cogs play into what we see in front of us?' These two have been together [for years], so we don't yet know what Gaga is like without her. So we don't know exactly what part of that personality plays into her projects."

Justin Bieber Paternity Suit Dropped?
Justin Bieber
Photo: WireImage
Justin Bieber won't have to take a paternity test after all. Less than two weeks after a California woman claimed that the "Baby" singer had fathered a child with her last year following a brief backstage tryst, TMZ is reporting that lawyers for accuser Mariah Yeater quietly dropped the suit last week.
In fact, the gossip site is adding that not only has the paternity case been withdrawn, but lawyers Lance Rogers and Matt Pare have quit representing Yeater entirely.
Bieber's camp had vigorously denied the claim from the moment Yeater launched the paternity action earlier this month. Yeater claimed in a signed affidavit in the suit that she had unprotected sex with Bieber last October in a backstage area at one of the singer's concerts at Los Angeles' Staples Center and that her four-month-old baby is his.
Fighting Back: What Are Justin's Legal Options Now?
Last week, Bieber's camp confirmed that the 17-year-old singer would take a paternity test as soon as he returns from a European promotional jaunt in celebration of his just-released Christmas album, Under the Mistletoe.
"I can confirm that the team has proactively made arrangements for Justin to be tested upon his return and we're going to hold everyone who is involved responsible," Bieber spokesperson Matthew Hiltzik said in a statement. "It's sad that someone would fabricate malicious, defamatory, and demonstrably false claims," Hiltzik added. "We'll vigorously pursue all available legal remedies to protect Justin and to hold those involved with bringing this suit accountable for their actions." It is unclear if Bieber's camp will still pursue a lawsuit over the bogus claims.
Hiltzik could not be reached for confirmation at press time; MTV News also could not reach Yeater's lawyers at press time.

Britney Spears And Howie D Have 'Grown Up' Together
Howie D
Photo: MTV News
Britney Spears may be the leading lady on the Femme Fatale Tour, but that doesn't mean she doesn't want to bring some guys along for the ride.
Next up, Backstreet Boy Howie D is slated to hit the road with Spears, following in the footsteps of DJ Pauly D and Joe Jonas. The South American tour dates — which kick off November 20, days after Howie releases his solo album Back to Me — were an enticing offer to the pop singer.
"I embraced it with open arms," he told MTV News of the trek, which ends November 28. "She's such a great, talented person. We've known each other for many, many years."
He isn't lying: Howie and Britney grew up together in the industry, with the Backstreet Boys and Spears two of the figureheads of the late-'90s pop revival. Howie said they're rooted in the same place, which will lend itself nicely to touring together.
"We kind of came out of the same camp, out of the Orlando pop scene with us and 'NSYNC and Britney," he recalled. "I feel like we've all grown together and have very similar, parallel lives with us and our music, [with] certain moments being very, very hot, certain moments not, and just riding the wave up and down as it's going. Even [with our] personal lives, having families, having kids. I have a huge respect for her, not only as an artist, but as a person. It's good to be around people you've known and people you've grown up with."
So what keeps people coming back for more from the likes of Howie and Britney? He has a theory: "It's a test of good music being out there," he said. "We really take pride in making good records, timeless records, and being true to our craft and trying to give our fans what they want ... trying to constantly take each record to the next level, push the envelope."
Do you want Howie to tour with Britney in the States? Let us know in the comments!

Justin Bieber Takes Paternity Test
Justin Bieber
Photo: Dave M. Benett/Getty Images
Justin Bieber is a man of his word. After promising he would take a DNA test when a paternity suit was brought against him, TMZ reports the pop star took one Friday night at a lab in New Jersey.
The gossip site reports that the test was taken under "very controlled circumstances," and the next move is on Mariah Yeater, the woman who claimed that her son is Bieber's before dropping her paternity suit last week.
Bieber and his team have maintained that the 17-year-old is not the father of 3-month-old Trystan. E! News reports that there is no timeframe for when Yeater must provide a DNA sample.
When MTV News caught up with Bieber on Thursday night, one day before he took the test, he shrugged off the controversy, instead focusing on the positive and saying he's been doing "great" these days.
Bieber sat down with NYC radio station Z100 earlier that day and joked that he'd prefer the rumors be about running away to South America with a supermodel. "Right now, I'm focusing on my album and the music and the [Pencils of Promise] charity we're doing and just being positive, because Christmastime is a time for joy and happiness, so that's what I'm thinking," Bieber said. "And as far as the whole baby situation, it's unfortunate that it had to happen like that. People make false accusations, but things happen in this industry and you have to keep your head high and be positive."
Those words mirror the advice Bieber's mentor, Usher, shared with him: "Stay strong. And know that all of this comes with the territory."

Miley Cyrus Stands Up Occupy Wall Street in New Video
Two weeks after taking on critics who mocked her weight gain, the singer/actress has placed herself in the middle of Occupy Wall Street - the global protests in which the self-proclaimed 99%, who feel as if the rules favor the rich, have tried to make their voices known - by releasing a new video.

Britney Spears Asks You For Black Friday Shopping Ideas
Even Britney Spears is not immune from feeling the retail pressure.
On Wednesday, the pop star Tweeted to her fans, asking what she should buy for her loved ones ... specifically her mom Lynne. Britney wrote:
"Since I'm on tour, I'm gonna do my Holiday shopping online this year..but I need ur help picking out gifts. Let's start w/ mom! Any ideas?"
Hilariously, her Twitter following (currently 11.2 million and rising by the day), responded. "GET YOUR MOM A CUSTOMIZED SLAVE 4 U OUTFIT," one Tweeted.
"She would look so hot!" Spears replied. "She would definitely look fierce :)"
The soon-to-be 30-year-old also LOLed at this suggestion: "Give her a picture of you as Mrs. Claus, Jason as Santa and Sean and Jayden as little elves!"
And she liked a sweet, simple idea from a follower who said: "I think you should get a scrap book made for her! That way you can have it hand made!"
Brit eventually settled on the hairstyling tool EZ Curler for her mom. Not as fun as these other ideas, but probably more useful as a stocking stuffer.

Elizabeth Olsen Talks 'Amazing' 2011
Elizabeth Olsen
Photo: MTV News
By any sort of Hollywood metric, Elizabeth Olsen has had a wonderful year. In January, the actress became the talk of Sundance with the debut of the harrowing drama "Martha Marcy May Marlene" and a claustrophobic horror flick, "Silent House."
In subsequent months she took on roles opposite everyone from Zac Efron to Robert De Niro, and she'll soon star with Glenn Close in the period drama "Therese Raquin." And as 2011 inches to a close, her name has cropped up in awards-season talk: She's already nabbed an ensemble Gotham Awards nomination and could well find herself in the Golden Globe and Oscar mix.
Not bad. But when you consider this is the first year that Olsen has been on the entertainment scene — unless you count long-ago appearances with her sisters in those "Adventures of Mary-Kate and Ashley" musicals — the 22-year-old's 2011 goes from generally wonderful to simply magical (and no doubt jealousy-inducing for her peers).
And that's why we've named Elizabeth Olsen one of the actresses we're most thankful for this year. We recently sat down with her to look back at her accomplishments, to look forward to what she has coming down the line, and to find out what she'll do if she ends up winning awards this season.
MTV News: You know you might have to start giving some speeches soon ...
Elizabeth Olsen: I have zero expectation on any of that. I didn't even have anything beforehand that I could think the movie would become what it has become, with a great distributor, good buzz. This year has been such a learning experience. It's been amazing. I feel like I have an understanding of so many different aspects after making a movie. Before I didn't even know how to make a movie, and then I realized I didn't even know how to promote a movie, and then I realized there's a whole process of doing that that's even longer than making the movie. You just have to be thankful that you have the opportunity to get to do that and people want to talk to you about your work.
MTV: Is there one surreal moment from this year that encapsulates what a crazy run you've been having?
Olsen: The first thing that came to my head when you said that was I remember when I finished making ["Martha Marcy"] and I had dinner with my friend in the East Village. I was totally thrown off because I was in upstate New York for three months, and then I was in the East Village on a Saturday night and was so confused that people acted the way they acted. I was like, "Why are people so abrasive? It's so weird." I remember telling my friend, talking about making this movie, that I literally had the best experience of my life working on something. And that's including all the fun stuff you made with your friends in elementary school.
MTV: Speaking of promoting a film, do you read your own press at this point?
Olsen: At this point I'm interested in those things. Give me a couple months and I probably won't be. I don't know why. I think those opinions change all the time. Right now I'm just interested because I'm fascinated by the movie so I'm fascinated about what people think and get from the movie, because it is very unique.
MTV: Your co-star John Hawkes has compared your performance in "Martha Marcy" to Jennifer Lawrence's in "Winter's Bone." With "Hunger Games" she's now made the leap to a high-profile franchise. Is it only a matter of time before we see you in a "Transformers" or a "Spider-Man"?
Olsen: I don't know, but I don't think so. I'm just trying to pick whatever's most interesting to me at that point. I'm not trying to think of things studio or non-studio. There are a bunch of things I'd like to do in 2012 that are all very different from each other. What they all have in common are amazing people to work with and an interesting character to try and create.
MTV: Above and beyond the acting, do you have ambitions to write or direct?
Olsen: No, I don't. I like doing this. Dialogue I'm very bad at.
I do like writing essays.
MTV: That is kind of nerdy.
Olsen: I know! I like writing essays. I have to write one tonight. So much fun!
MTV: Have you adjusted to being on set away from friends and family? Because that experience can be isolating.
Olsen: I would like to think that I'm really good at adjusting to changes. But I'm not as good as I thought I was. When I was working in Spain, that was really hard. It was a long shoot and it was Spain and I was coming in the middle of shooting, so everyone had already been there for six weeks and no one was going out to explore the city anymore. I was just by myself. But in situations like that, you do call your family. My sisters came and visited me. It was hard to be there and not even have the option of making a quick phone call and meeting up with someone. But now when I look back on being in Spain, I don't really think of it as being lonely. But at the moment, you know, I thought I really knew what loneliness was. I was like, "This is so lonely!"
MTV: Let's talk about "Very Good Girls," in which you'll be co-starring with Dakota Fanning. When is that shoot going to happen?
Olsen: We have to wait, because it's set in New York in the summertime. We'll do it next year. Dakota and I know each other, since we have the same mutual friends and went to the same high school. We've had dinner with the director, just chatting and trying to figure out what we can do to maybe change the script a bit, change scenes.
MTV: What was the key thing that attracted you to the role?
Olsen: The thing that's great about this script is I treat my relationships with my girlfriends as family and as probably the most important relationships in my life. I've had the same friends since I was in kindergarten. I feel like a lot of times in film and television, you don't get a chance to understand that type of relationship. "Sex in the City" is the closest thing you get to it. I think ["Very Good Girls"] is a great depiction of two young girls' friendship when they're graduating high school.
MTV: It seems like this role is the closest to your experience.
Olsen: Totally. It's important to be in a film like that. And everyone involved is going to be great to work with.
Check out everything we've got on "Martha Marcy May Marlene."

Justin Bieber And Boyz II Men Unwrap 'Fa La La' Video
Shawn Stockman and Justin Bieber
Photo: LiveWire Entertainment
Christmas is right around the corner, but the Biebs is already in the holiday spirit. On Wednesday (November 23), Justin Bieber dropped the video for "Fa La La" with Boyz II Men. There are no reindeer or presents under the tree; instead, Justin and the Philadelphia R&B outfit sing of a warm love that will endure through the holiday season.
The black-and-white clip begins in an empty loft, where Bieber sings alone, with his arms flailing and face slightly scrunching every time he hits those heartfelt notes. Justin's solo intro leads way to a collaborative bridge, where Boyz II Men join in. "Baby you de-serve eve-ry-thing you want/ It's your night," they all sing in harmony as the "It's So Hard to Say Goodbye" vocalists join the teenage star in song on the front porch of a brick house.
No elaborate set needed. With an empty city as their backdrop, the four crooners throw down in an old-fashioned sing-off. As the track builds, BIIM's Wanya Morris really gets into it, pounding his chest and kicking one leg up to accentuate his performance. Bieber, who is dressed in a white tee and slim-cut leather jacket, tugs on his collar to let you just how much his words mean to him.
On November 1, Bieber teased the clip when he tweeted, "Killed it with @BoyzIImen on DWTS and then just shot a video for our song #FALALA with @colintilley - great night! living a dream. Thanku," in reference to his appearance on "Dancing With The Stars" and the Colin Tilley-directed "Fa La La" video.
Maybe some of Boyz II Men's subject matter was a bit mature for the pint-size Bieber, but they influenced him nonetheless. "He told us his mom didn't want him to sing 'I'll Make Love to You,' so he'd sneak and go sing it somewhere," Wanya Morris told MTV News. "It's also good to know we've influenced such a good artist. It's something that makes us feel we've accomplished [something and] we're doing our job, [that] a guy so young and so into his craft [is] influenced by three guys from Philadelphia that love to sing."
Yes, "Fa La La" is the latest single from JB's holiday LP, Under the Mistletoe, but Tilley and company didn't overload the video with Christmas themes as to so implicitly tie it to December 25 -- after all, true love should last all year 'round.
What do you think of the video? Let us know in the comments!

Nickelback Detroit 'Debacle' Perfect For Funny Or Die
Chad Kroeger of Nickelback
Photo: Getty Images
The ongoing situation between fans of the Detroit Lions and Nickelback — which, for the uninitiated, involves the band's performance during the team's Thanksgiving game, an online petition and the United Way — is the kind of thing that practically lends itself to parody. So it's no surprise that the folks over at Funny or Die have decided to enter the fray, with a new video that actually stars the Canadian quartet.
Given the rather vehement acrimony the band has suffered thanks to the petition (which, at last count, includes more than 75,000 signatures and messages like "Haven't the good people of Detroit been through enough?"), you'd probably be surprised to learn that, as soon as they were approached by FoD, Nickelback said yes to the spoof. Then again, they're the kind of band that is definitely aware of their public perception.
"They called us up. They said, 'This whole debacle that's going on in Detroit it just lunacy. We here in the comedy field think it's just perfect for making fun of, and if you guys would like to come down here ... ' " frontman Chad Kroeger told MTV News. "We're huge fans of Funny or Die and anything Will Ferrell is associated with — we're there. So we're like, 'Absolutely, we'd love to come and make fun of the whole thing and ourselves at the same time.' "
Of course, Nickelback will also be the first to admit that perhaps their acting skills aren't up to par. Which is why the only thing standing in the way of their Funny or Die clip's viral success may be Nickelback themselves.
"As soon as they get real actors to take our places, then it's going to be viral," guitarist Ryan Peake laughed.

Michael Jackson Estate: What's Next?
Michael Jackson

Michael Jackson has remained just as big a star in death as he was in life — if not bigger. Like Elvis, Bob Marley, Frank Sinatra and Tupac Shakur before him, interest in all things Jackson spiked following the singer's death and continues to be strong two years after his shocking passing on June 25, 2009.
Jackson's name has been in the news on a daily basis over the past month thanks to the involuntary manslaughter trial of his former physician, Dr. Conrad Murray, who was found guilty, the jury announced Monday. It's not the kind of publicity the Jackson estate is looking for, but with the trial now over, the focus will likely turn to the next projects from the singer's vaults.
To date, the estate has been busy lining up one project after another, beginning with 2009's This Is It, the documentary on Jackson's planned comeback tour that grossed close to $200 million worldwide on its way to becoming the #2 music documentary of all time.
That was followed by the release of Michael, a posthumous album with unreleased Jackson tracks that sold more than 500,000 copies, alongside more than 1 million units of the This Is It soundtrack. There were also 3 million units shifted of the Ubisoft video game "Michael Jackson: The Experience," which helped rack up the more than $1 billion the estate has brought in since Jackson's death through a combination of music sales, film/TV revenue, music publishing, licensing and a $31 million recording contract with Sony.
Cirque du Soleil's traveling MJ extravaganza, "Immortal," made its American debut this month, boasting a soundtrack that features a number of mash-ups and reimaginings of the singer's music, plus some previously unheard bits. The show's soundtrack is slated to hit stores November 21.
When the show hits Las Vegas in December, it will coincide with the annual Michael Jackson Fan Fest (December 3-14), the ritual gathering of the flock that this year will include a raft of never-before-seen memorabilia from the King of Pop. Among the items at the first-ever estate-authorized fest at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino are the actual gates of Neverland Ranch, Jackson's personal book collection, the 1999 Rolls Royce Seraph limousine with 24-karat gold embellishments designed by the singer, the 10-foot-tall HIStory statue, the spaceship set from the "Scream" video, the throne from the Egyptian-themed "Remember the Time" clip and the tank from the "Earth Song" live performance.
Also reportedly due soon is a repackaging of Jackson's 1987 Bad album, which, like previous reissues, is expected to feature previously unearthed bonus material. The original album featured landmark songs such as the title track, "I Just Can't Stop Loving You," "The Way You Make Me Feel," "Man in the Mirror," "Smooth Criminal" and "Dirty Diana."
Given the amount of unreleased material that was reportedly left in the vaults at Jackson's death, there is a strong possibility that another album of unheard tunes could be in the offing soon as well.

Mila Kunis Attends U.S. Marine Corps Ball
Moore famously asked her to the event this summer on YouTube:
Mila Kunis Invited to Marine Corps Ball
According to local news station WNCT, the 28-year-old actress arrived to the venue just before 2:30 p.m., where she was quickly whisked away from the media.
Kunis made it to the Greenville Convention Center, where she and Moore "enjoyed the night," Marine spokesperson Capt. Scott Sasser told Access Hollywood.
"She's going to get a chance to learn about the Marine Corps, and we're all going to have a great time celebrating the Marine Corps birthday," Sasser said.
Moore asked Kunis out via YouTube after making a bet with a fellow Marine when he was serving his second combat deployment in Musa Qala, Afghanistan.
He's not kissing and telling about Friday, but "I always thought I had a chance, and sometimes, that's all you need," he said of asking out his famous date.
The Friends With Benefits star wasn't the only one star power to a Marine Corps Ball.
Just one week prior, her co-star Justin Timberlake had "one of the most moving evenings" of his entire life at another Marine Corps Ball in Richmond, Va.
Kristin Cavallari also attended one outside San Diego after being asked on Twitter.

Adam Lambert's 'Whole Lotta Love': The Story Behind The Cover
Adam Lambert performs "Whole Lotta Love" on "American Idol" on Tuesday

Imagine a freight train speeding toward you at midnight. Or a rockslide barreling down a hill as you try to outrace it. That's the feeling of the ominous, chugging Jimmy Page riff that kicks off Led Zeppelin's 1970 Stonehenge of rock, "Whole Lotta Love." And that's before singer Robert Plant leans into one of the nastiest, ecstatic rock screams this side of the Who's "Won't Get Fooled Again."
That's the song Adam Lambert chose to sing on "American Idol" rock night Tuesday (May 5), and, needless to say, it was a challenge that the eyeliner-loving Los Angeles stage veteran was more than up for, hitting a series of high notes and rock screams that would have made Plant proud. It was a risky maneuver that paid off for Lambert, who chose a tune that came in at #75 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the "500 Greatest Songs of All Time" in 2004.
The legendary British rock act recorded the tribute to Chicago blues icon Willie Dixon during their second U.S. tour after working it out in their live show, including it on their 1969 classic album Led Zeppelin II. Like many of the songs Zeppelin performed early in their career, "Love" was a blues standard turned on its head with a heavy dose of crunching psychedelic guitar and thundering drums, courtesy of late drummer John Bonham. The song was based on a 1962 tune by another blues forefather, Muddy Waters, called "You Need Love," which was penned by Dixon.
For Zeppelin's version, Plant customized the lyrics by adding some lyrical quotes from a few other songs Dixon wrote for Howlin' Wolf, "Back Door Man" and "Shake For Me," nailing the tricky vocal in a single take. It was also inspired by 1966's "You Need Loving" from the British rock group the Small Faces, for whom Zeppelin had great affection, but they also did not credit Dixon for his part in writing the original lyrics. The song became Zeppelin's first U.S. single and their only U.S. top 10 hit. Though their manager would not let them release singles in the U.K. because he thought it cannibalized album sales, the song was finally released as the band's only British single in 1997.
Dixon sued Zeppelin over the song in 1985, claiming it borrowed too heavily from his "You Need Love," and Zeppelin reached an agreement with him, with Dixon using the money he received to set up a program that provided musical instruments for schools. A cornerstone of heavy rock, the tune -- which was the theme song for the long-running British countdown show "Top of the Pops" in the 1970s and '80s -- has been covered by dozens of artists over the years, from Tina Turner and Ben Harper to Prince, Slash, Leona Lewis, Train's Pat Monahan, the London Symphony Orchestra and Jane's Addiction.

Lady Gaga Wins Big, Guys Rule At MTV EMA
Lady Gaga performs at the 2011 EMA

It was an evening of surprises at the 2011 MTV Europe Awards that included a takeover by the nominated men, a tribute to the late Amy Winehouse, a streaker, and, of course, an out-of-this-world performance from Lady Gaga.
Broadcast from the halls of Belfast's Odyssey Arena in Northern Ireland on Sunday, the Selena Gomez-hosted ceremony kicked off with two-time nominee Coldplay, who performed their latest hit "Every Teardrop Is a Waterfall." Frontman Chris Martin danced his way from the arena catwalk to the main stage as a spiral of lights spun around the band, igniting the arena.

Shortly after, cameras panned to the center of the venue where the night's host, Selena Gomez, stood prominently in the middle of an onstage circle of fire. It was only a taste of what was to come from the former Disney starlet's hosting spectacle, which included a string of outfit changes, an appearance from her rap alter ego and mingling with pop peer Katy Perry.
"Jersey Shore" stars Snooki and JWoww were on-site to deliver the first award of the night: Best Live. "What's up Belfast? 'Jersey Shore' is in the house!" they screamed simultaneously, before announcing Katy Perry as the award recipient.
"This is probably my favorite award because my fans mean so much to me," the pop superstar told the crowd. "I'm so tired, but it's all worth it. Thank you. I love you."
LMFAO brought their wild antics to the EMA with a performance of their summer smash "Party Rock Anthem." The electro/pop duo proved their hard-partying ways with a life-size zebra float and a dance-off with America's Best Dance Crew winner Quest Crew.
Lady Gaga took home the award for Best Female, which was presented to her by David Hasselhoff. Pitted against Adele, Beyoncé, Jennifer Lopez and Katy Perry, the pop diva beat the competition and walked up to the podium in a WTF-worthy metallic ensemble. Emotions overcame the singer later on when she nabbed the Best Song and Best Video awards for her mega-hit "Born This Way."
"I knew that this song was very special when I wrote it," the three-time EMA winner told the screaming crowd during her second award speech. "This is the single most important song that I've ever written, the single-most important album and until now, the single most important moment."
One of the night's surprises came courtesy of a streaker, who interrupted Hayden Panettiere as she was presenting the Best Song award.
Alongside his quartet of backup singers/band, Bruno Mars kept the momentum going with a performance of "Marry You." The stage looked as if there was a wedding going on, with its heart-filled backdrop set and confetti that spewing into the air.
Like the 2011 VMAs, MTV dedicated a special presentation and award to industry legend Queen. Presented by Katy Perry, Brian May and Roger Taylor of the group accepted the Global Icon of the Year award, thanked the network and even gave the California Gurl a shout-out.
"How wonderful, because we here at the birth of MTV. How wonderful for us to be here 40 years later and to be honored in this way," May said.
While Jesse J brought some soaring vocals with a performance of "Price Tag," it was Gaga who treated her Little Monsters to outstanding theatrics with her performance of "Marry the Night." Dressed in her orbital getup, the pop titan danced atop a gigantic onstage moon while she belted out the dance track. She later joined a slew of dancers back on Earth for some hair-whipping and a choreographed routine.
The Red Hot Chili Peppers and Snow Patrol assisted in the EMA takeover with audience-packed performances outside of the show's venue from the stages of Ulster Hall and Belfast City Council.
Midway through the show, it seemed the 2011 EMA were all about the guys when both Linkin Park and Eminem appeared via pre-recorded telecast to accept their awards for Best Rock and Best Hip Hop.
Despite his current public controversy, Justin Bieber appeared positive when he walked up to the podium to accept the award for Best Male. To his surprise, Biebs was also presented the award for Best Pop by collaborator Ludacris backstage.
In a presentation introduced by Jessie J, the late Amy Winehouse was honored with a short video montage that included commentary from fans.
"It saddens me that I never got to thank Amy for breaking boundaries as I genuinely believe that without her, I wouldn't be standing here today," Jessie shared.
After his smooth performance of "Marry You," it was a good night for Bruno Mars, who took home the award for Best Push Act from MTV News' own Tim Kash during backstage interviews. He later appeared onstage to accept the award for Best New Act.
Gomez took on double duty at the show when she performed "Hit the Lights" alongside her band the Scene. But it was her boyfriend, Justin Bieber, who really got into the festive spirit when he performed a medley of his tunes "Mistletoe" and "Never Say Never."
It wouldn't be a show without some onstage pair-ups. David Guetta brought his string of collaborators together to perform their respective team-ups from his Nothing but the Beat LP, including Taio Cruz, Ludacris and Jessie J.
And that's not the only surprise collabo the Europe Music Awards had in store. "American Idol" runner-up Adam Lambert joined Queen for the show's concluding medley performance of "The Show Must Go On," "We Will Rock You" and "We Are the Champions." Decked out in an oversize black trench coat and matching black ensemble, Lambert showcased his over-the-top vocals alongside the iconic group.
