Beyonce Cast As Queen Tara In 3-D Animated Film 'Epic'

<P>For a while now, folks have been referring to <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/knowles_beyonce/artist.jhtml">Beyonc&#233;</a> as a queen ... but now, she's going to make it official. On the big screen.</P><P>According to <a href="http://www.deadline.com/2012/05/beyonce-colin-farrell-josh-hutcherson-amanda-seyfried-steven-tyler-lead-voice-cast-for-fox-animated-film-epic/" target="_blank">Deadline.com</a>, Beyonc&#233; has been cast as Queen Tara in the upcoming 3-D, CGI-animated film "Epic," a 20th Century Fox film from the makers of the hits "Ice Age" and "Rio."</P><P>The film reportedly tells the tale of a teenage girl transported to a secret universe, where she finds herself dropped square in the middle of a battle between the forces of good and evil. She joins forces with "a rag-tag team of fun and whimsical characters" to save the world. "Epic" is slated to hit theaters on May 24, 2013.</P><P>It's the first confirmed role for Beyonc&#233; since she took time off for maternity leave, though she's also slated to star in the Clint Eastwood-directed remake of "A Star Is Born."</P><P>Starring alongside Bey in the movie are the likes of Colin Farrell, Amanda Seyfried, Aziz Ansari and a pair of her fellow musicians, Pitbull and Aerosmith frontman/"American Idol" judge Steven Tyler. Johnny Knoxville, Jason Sudeikis and Judah Friedlander round out the cast.</P><P>Josh Hutcherson is also set to appear alongside Beyonc&#233; in the film. He's currently riding high off the massive success of "Hunger Games," which is tied with "Bridesmaids" for the most nominations at the 2012 MTV Movie Awards, which will air Sunday, June 3, at 9 p.m. ET/PT from the Gibson Amphitheatre in Universal City, California.</P><P><b>Head over to <a href="http://www.mtv.com/ontv/movieawards/2012/">MovieAwards.MTV.com</a> to vote for your favorite flicks now! Conrad Murray Asks For Appeal In Michael Jackson Manslaughter Case

Murray is asking appellate court to re-test a piece of medical evidence from his trial.

<P>The imprisoned cardiologist <a href="/news/articles/1673906/michael-jackson-conrad-murray-verdict-guilty-involuntary-manslaughter.jhtml">convicted of manslaughter</a>&#8232; in the 2009 death of <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/jackson_michael/artist.jhtml">Michael Jackson</a> filed a request on Monday to have a key piece of evidence in his trial re-tested. Dr. Conrad Murray is asking an appellate court to order a lab to authorize a forensic analysis on residue in a drug vial taken from the bedroom of Jackson's rented Los Angeles estate.</P><P>According to the <a href="http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-me-0731-murray-20120731,0,2898322.story" target="_blank"><I>Los Angeles Times</I></a> Murray's defense team thinks that the 100-milliliter bottle, which was a key piece of evidence at the 2011 trial that ended with Murray's conviction on involuntary manslaughter charges, could help lead to a successful appeal of the sentence.</P><P>Murray's fingerprint was on the bottle, which prosecutors said held the lethal dose of the surgical anesthetic propofol that killed Jackson. Prosecutors had argued that Murray mixed a small amount of propofol with another anesthetic, lidocaine, in an intravenous drip and then left Jackson unattended.</P><P>Murray's defense team said the vial was in a bag of trash and was unrelated to Jackson's death, countering that the pop icon injected himself with propofol from a syringe while the doctor wasn't looking.</P><P>"If a forensic examination of the residue in Exhibit 30 revealed no lidocaine, it would completely negate [the prosecution expert's] concluding theory ... leaving only the theory of bolus injection just prior to Jackson's death," appellate attorney Valerie Wass wrote in a filing.</P><P>This is the third time Murray's lawyers have attempted to launch an appeal on these grounds after they argued that they did not fully comprehend the need to test the residue until the testimony of a prosecution expert near the end of the seven-week trial. During the trial, judge Michael Pastor refused a motion for further analysis shortly after the verdict; a second request was also denied.</P><P>Murray, 58, received a four-year sentence but is not expected to serve more than two years in county jail.</p>

The pair have <a href="/news/articles/1673032/justin-bieber-usher-christmas-song.jhtml">collaborated on songs</a> and onstage, but now they are about to have their first battle &#8212; on the charts.</P><P>Usher's album, <a href="/news/articles/1686990/usher-looking-4-myself-evolution.jhtml"><i>Looking 4 Myself</i></a>, debuted on top of the <a href="/news/articles/1687847/usher-billboard-looking-4-myself.jhtml"><i>Billboard</i> albums chart</a>, becoming his fourth #1 album after selling 128,000 copies in its first week. But now it's Bieber's turn: Just one week later, Bieber will be entering the charts with his third studio album, <a href="/news/articles/1685471/justin-bieber-believe-track-list.jhtml"><i>Believe</i></a> and <a href="/news/articles/1687988/justin-bieber-believe-album-sales.jhtml">early predictions</a> are expecting huge album sales.</P><P></p><div class="player-placeholder right" title="Do Usher And Justin Bieber Have a Friendly Competition For Record Sales?" id="vid:789781.id:1686957" width="415" height="255"></div><p></P><P>According to <a href="http://www.billboard.com/#/news/justin-bieber-kenny-chesney-headed-for-top-1007386952.story?utm_source=most_recent" target="_blank"><i>Billboard</i></a>, <i>Believe</i> is on course to sell between 410,000 and 440,000 units, which would make it the year's biggest debut to date.</P><P>Even though Bieber is on track to beat his mentor in sales, the R&B superstar isn't concerned.</P><P>Regarding whether he and Bieber speak about topping each other on the charts, Usher told MTV News, "Actually, we have not had that conversation. We try to calculate when we release so that we support each other. It's like a seesaw: 'You take it this week; I'll take it this week.' "</P><P>Usher also said that even though he and Bieber do not appear on each other's albums, he was still heavily involved in each song that made the cut on <i>Believe</i>.</P><P>"We talked about many different things when making his album. The coolest part about it is we support each other regardless if I'm on the album or he's on my album or not," Usher said. "Every album, it is that sit-down that we have to have, to go through this record. We talk about the audiences that are there: This song is for this audience member, this song is for this region. And that's always very helpful."</P><P>Bieber shared during <a href="http://www.mtv.com/videos/news/765694/usher-continues-to-mentor-justin-bieber.jhtml#id=1684329">"MTV First: Justin Bieber"</a> that he still turns to Usher for sound advice.</P><P>"He's just giving me the advice of: Always keep the people that were there at the beginning and keep them with you, because those are the people that really care and they want to see you succeed."</P><P><i>Do you expect Justin Bieber to top Usher on the charts? <P>One "X Factor" contestant learned what happens when you attempt to pull a fast one on the judges. Over the weekend, while <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/spears_britney/artist.jhtml">Britney
Spears</a>, <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/lovato__demi/artist.jhtml">Demi Lovato</a>, L.A. Reid and seat-filling judge Louis Walsh (who was assisting an ill Simon Cowell) were in Kansas City, Missouri they walked out on one contestant who attempted to audition with his back to the judges.</P><P>According to <a href="http://www.people.com/people/article/0,,20602844,00.html" target="_blank">People.com</a> sources, not only did the contestant audition with his back to the panel, but he also wasn't all that talented of a singer, adding insult to injury. "It was really awkward," an eyewitness told the site of the kooky audition. "You could tell the judges were done. I don't think they had a choice. They didn't want to waste their time."</P><P></p><div class="player-placeholder right" title="Britney Spears Explains Why She Wanted To Be A Part Of 'X Factor'" id="vid:769620" width="415" height="255"></div><p></P><P>Another onlooker added that the male contestant didn't leave the judges much of an option given his lack of talent. "He was one of the worst singers and had a bad attitude ... [The judges] all hated it and walked off," the source said. Additionally, he had no idea they had walked out since his back was to them for his entire performance.</P><P>Everyone except Britney eventually made their way back to the judges'
table to hear the last contestant. Spears' absence was met with the audience chanting, "Where's Britney?" However, she was only gone for a short time, as she returned later on for another batch of contestants.</P><P>Spears and Lovato made their debut as <a href="/news/articles/1685844/britney-spears-x-factor-judging.jhtml">"X Factor" judges in late May</a>, weeks after Cowell and Reid appeared at the <a href="/news/articles/1685206/britney-spears-x-factor-concept.jhtml">Fox upfront</a> alongside the singers to announce them as additions to the show. "Just really being able to be there and inspire the other contestants ... they're so young and they're trying to fulfill their dreams," Spears said at the event. "It's just a whole beautiful concept. <P>On Thursday (January 7), the U.K.'s Royal Mail unveiled a series of 10 new stamps, honoring the most iconic album covers of the past 40 years.</P><P>The albums featured in the new series are the <a href="/music/artist/rolling_stones/artist.jhtml">Rolling Stones</a>' <i>Let It Bleed,</i> <a href="/music/artist/led_zeppelin/artist.jhtml">Led Zeppelin</a>'s <i>IV,</i> <a href="/music/artist/bowie_david/artist.jhtml">David Bowie</a>'s <i>The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars,</i> <a href="/music/artist/mike_oldfield/artist.jhtml">Mike Oldfield</a>'s <i>Tubular Bells,</i> <a href="/music/artist/clash/artist.jhtml">The Clash</a>'s <i>London Calling,</i> <a href="/music/artist/new_order/artist.jhtml">New Order</a>'s <i>Power, Corruption and Lies,</i> <a href="/music/artist/primal_scream/artist.jhtml">Primal Scream</a>'s <i>Screamadelica,</i> <a href="/music/artist/pink_floyd/artist.jhtml">Pink Floyd</a>'s <i>The Division Bell,</i> <a href="/music/artist/blur/artist.jhtml">Blur</a>'s <i>Parklife</i> and &#8212; the most recent album on to make the cut &#8212; <a href="/music/artist/coldplay/artist.jhtml">Coldplay</a>'s <i>A Rush of Blood to the Head.</i></P><P>Meant to honor "the most potent graphic images of modern times, many of which have provided a visual soundtrack to people's lives," the series is the end result of a lengthy research process by the Royal Mail, who looked through thousands of album covers by British artists before deciding on the final list. And, during a Wednesday night BBC Radio broadcast, it was revealed that the queen herself actually approved each design.</P><P>Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page &#8212; who helped design the cover for <i>IV</i> &#8212; was on hand to celebrate the release of the stamps and recalled the mysterious nature of the album's iconic imagery.</P><P>"Almost 40 years after the album came out, nobody knows the old man who featured on the cover, nor the artist who painted him," he said. "That sort of sums up what we wanted to achieve with the album cover, which has remained both anonymous and enigmatic at the same time."</P><P>Of course, any great honor is befitting of an equally great contest, so, on the same day the stamps were made available to the general public, Coldplay decided to give one of their <i>Rush of Blood</i> stamps away. In a message on their official site, the band held a contest to send one lucky fan "a letter using a Coldplay stamp, postmarked with today's issue date."</P><P>"We visited our local post office earlier today and bought some of the Coldplay stamps," the message read. "Very nice they are too."</p>

<P>It's not exactly <a href="/news/articles/1663946/kesha-new-album.jhtml">"balls-out irreverent rock and roll"</a> &#8212; quite the opposite, in fact &#8212; but with one 40-second snippet, Ke$ha is serving notice that her new album is most definitely going to be a departure.</P><P>On Wednesday (June 6), frequent Ke$h collaborator Dr. Luke gave fans <a href="http://soundcloud.com/drluke/snippet-super" target="_blank">a sneak peek</a> at a song from her long-in-the-works new album, an all-too-brief preview that features her cooing about a lover's prowess &#8212; "When you take my body to the stars/ I believe it/ Boy, this love is supernatural/ Can you feel it?" over a bed of shimmering synths and knotty bass that gradually builds to a twisting, rapidly contrasting electronic break.</P><P><iframe width="100%" height="166" scrolling="no" frameborder="no" src="http://w.soundcloud.com/player/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fapi.soundcloud.com%2Ftracks%2F48805816&amp;auto_play=false&amp;show_artwork=true&amp;color=ff7700"></iframe></P><P>It's the kind of high-gloss production she largely avoided on her breakthrough <a href="/news/articles/1629566/keha-partying-pop-genius-weve-all-been-waiting.jhtml"><i>Animal</i></a> album, and while we certainly can't figure out how the track fits in with her <i>other</i> collaborations (she's reportedly worked with everyone from <a href="/news/articles/1685827/kesha-flaming-lips-tattoo.jhtml">Flaming Lips frontman Wayne Coyne</a> to Iggy Pop on the still-untitled new album), the new track certainly showcases her maturation. And thanks to Ke$h herself, at least we know what the new track is about: having sex with ghosts.</P><P>Yes, just hours after Dr. Luke leaked the snippet, Ke$ha took to her Twitter account to mock-chastise her producer, <a href="https://twitter.com/keshasuxx/status/210428157554196480" target="_blank">writing</a>: "You leaked my song about me having sexy time with a ghost, @thedoctorluke," she wrote. "Now everyone knows I get it on with ghosts!"</P><P></p><div class="player-placeholder right" title="Ke$ha Says New Album Will Be ' Balls-Out, Irreverent Rock'" id="vid: 652875" width="415" height="255"></div><p></P><P>Somehow, that doesn't surprise us. There's still no firm release date for Ke$ha's new album, which she began working on in February. But, from the sound of one snippet, at least, it sounds like things are progressing quickly. Those names haven't been confirmed, but onetime Pussycat Doll and "X Factor" judge Nicole Scherzinger has laid down her vocals for the album.</P><P>"There's classical sh--, like just me and a guitar and an orchestra or me with just an orchestra and a kid's choir," will.i.am told <i>Billboard</i> back in June about the solo effort. "There's some ghetto, ugly, dirty stuff. And then there's dance stuff, global world stuff and, like, avant-garde, left-of-center, for-art's-sake music that has nothing to do with getting played on the radio. I'm just art-ing out. <P><a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/lady_gaga/artist.jhtml">Lady Gaga</a> may be embracing her love of rock again on her next album. According to rumors, the singer hit the studio with Whitesnake guitarist Doug Aldrich.</P><P>Fansite Propagaga was the first to share the news about the rumored musical collaboration, which is said to have taken place in the City of Angels. "Whitesnake guitarist, Doug Aldrich, was recording with Gaga today in L.A.," <a href="http://www.aceshowbiz.com/news/view/00052555.html"
target="_blank">the site tweeted</a>. "@DJWS [DJ White Shadow] is rumored to have been in studio, as well."</P><P></p><div class="player-placeholder right" title="Lady Gaga Has The Title And Concept For Her Next Album" id="vid:717202" width="415" height="255"></div><p></P><P>A rep for the singer did not respond to MTV News' request for comment by press time, but the Mother Monster suggested on her own Twitter page earlier this month that she would be working with pal White Shadow on her next album.</P><P>This is hardly Gaga's first dalliance with the rock genre. She worked with Queen's Brian May on her last album, <a href="/news/articles/1669108/lady-gaga-you-and-i-music-video-premiere.jhtml"><i>Born This Way,</i> on the track "Yo&#252; and I,"</a> which was produced by the equally legendary Mutt Lange. She also worked with the late Clarence Clemons, who played saxophone on <a href="/news/articles/1663887/lady-gaga-edge-of-glory.jhtml">"Edge of Glory,"</a> further proving her love for rock and roll. That track was produced by White Shadow, along with Fernando Garibay.</P><P>Slowly but surely tracks are coming together for Gaga's new release, her follow-up to 2011's <i>Born This Way.</i> She recently teased fans with a new song, <a href="/news/articles/1690196/lady-gaga-new-music-car-new-york.jhtml">blasting it out of her car</a> while in New York City. She even implied that the dance track would be the first single. She previously tweeted that DJ White Shadow was the producer behind the lead single off the release.</P><P>Gaga has also been playing her new piano-heavy song "Princess Die" while on tour. During one stop, she opened up a bit about her next album, whose <a href="/news/articles/1686922/lady-gaga-new-album-title.jhtml">title she will announce in September</a>. "Let's just say I feel, I feel that when I wrote <i>Born This Way,</i> I demonstrated a sense of maturity," she said.</P><P>"And I feel that on the next album there's a lack of maturity &#8212; it's a tremendous lack of maturity or sense of responsibility."</p>

<P><a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/spears_britney/artist.jhtml">Britney Spears</a> is busy traveling the U.S. in search of singers who have "The X Factor," but one rejected contestant (and former Spears backup singer) isn't handling his dismissal from the show all that well, releasing a previously unheard Spears demo and hitting out at the singer on Facebook.</P><P></p><div class="player-placeholder right" title="Britney Spears Explains Why She Wanted To Be A Part Of 'X Factor'" id="vid:769620" width="415" height="255"></div><p></P><P>Singer Don Philip <a href="http://www.entertainmentwise.com/news/80415/LISTEN-Britney-Spears-Teams-Up-With-X-Factor-Reject-On-Leaked-Track-" target="_blank">released the track</a>, originally titled "Pleasure You," on Wednesday on his SoundCloud. The singer &#8212; who duetted with Spears on the ballad "I Will Still Love You" off her debut album, <i>... Baby One More Time</i> &#8212; also appears on "Pleasure You." <a href="http://www.digitalspy.com/music/s141/the-x-factor-us/news/a391696/britney-spears-song-featuring-x-factor-usa-reject-emerges-listen.html" target="_blank">Digital Spy</a> reports that the dance track is believed to be from a 2010 studio session for Spears' most recent album, the well-received <i>Femme Fatale.</i></P><P>Philip recently had an <a href="/news/articles/1687704/britney-spears-x-factor-partner-reunion.jhtml">emotional reunion with Spears</a> while auditioning for "X Factor" in San Francisco. The pop star reportedly recognized her former collaborator immediately and became emotional when Philip began crying onstage after what he has himself since admitted was a weak audition. She remained professional, however, and sided with her fellow judges in removing Philip from the competition.</P><P>He later took to <a href="http://www.wenn.com/all-news/x-factor-reject-takes-aim-at-former-duet-partner-britney-spears/" target="_blank">his Facebook</a> to explain why his audition went so poorly, and he also took a shot at Spears in the process. "Back to real life ... all my demons released ... I totally crocked when the pressure was on ... at least I didn't shave my head," he wrote. "My vocal [cords] tightened up like a snake around a mouse."</P><P>It is unclear whether Philip's vocal originally appeared on the "Pleasure You" demo or whether it was added later without Spears' knowledge.</P><P>The pop star has reportedly settled into her role as judge on "The X Factor" quite nicely. Talking to a paparazzi cameraman in Los Angeles in June, <a href="/news/articles/1687468/britney-spears-simon-cowell-x-factor-judge.jhtml">Simon Cowell said of Spears</a>, "She's been amazing. She's really taking time to learn how to do this. She's got her confidence up. Once people give her a chance, I think people are really going to get her. It will be a big surprise. She's a tough judge."</P><P>"The X Factor" returns to Fox on September 12.</p>

Will Black Keys Team Up With Ke$ha? First They Want Jim Nabors

The duo sat down with MTV News in Berlin to discuss a pair of unlikely collaborations.

<P>Theirs is a relationship that has spanned time and Twitter, <a href="https://twitter.com/#!/keshasuxx/status/77286418598211584" target="_blank">seafood</a> and <a href="https://twitter.com/#!/keshasuxx/status/157523381602889728" target="_blank">shaving</a>, but over the years, the unlikely bond between the <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/black_keys/artist.jhtml">Black Keys</a> and <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/id_3213641/artist.jhtml">Ke$ha</a> has grown to become something <i>more</i>: a genuine friendship, marked with the occasional trespassing charge.</P><P></p><div class="player-placeholder right" title="Would The Black Keys Ever Collaborate With Ke$ha?" id="vid:731631.id:1678505" width="240" height="211"></div><p></P><P>"We're friends with her, we've known her since way before she was famous, before she was even a singer, I guess," Keys drummer Patrick Carney told MTV News. "When she was 16 years old, she used to sneak into our shows. We kind of became friends with her by kicking her out of our backstage room, over and over again. She actually has snuck into shows in L.A., San Diego, Coachella ..."</P><P>"She snuck in and [got] kicked out of one show, like, <i>five</i> times," frontman Dan Auerbach added. "[She] snuck in through the kitchen. I don't know if she's such a big fan; she just likes breaking the rules."</P><P>So, when MTV News sat down with the 'Keys in Berlin during the premiere of their <a href="/news/articles/1678662/black-keys-gold-on-the-ceiling-music-video.jhtml">"Gold on the Ceiling"</a> video, we had to ask if their friendship with Ke$ha would take the next step: an actual musical collaboration. It's not all that far-fetched, considering both Ke$h and Auerbach live in Nashville ("I see her every once in a while flying by in her T-Top [convertible]," Auerbach laughed), and recently, the glittery one has logged studio time with <a href="https://twitter.com/#!/keshasuxx/status/160846424609787906" target="_blank">the Flaming Lips</a>. So, could we see a team-up on the next Black Keys album?</P><P>"I guess, I don't know," Carney said. "We don't really do that many collaborations, really."</P><P>OK, so if a Ke$ha collabo isn't in the cards, just who would the 'Keys like to work with next? Well, as it turns out, they've got their eyes set on landing a very big star for the next record ... even if they mistakenly believe he's deceased.</P><P>"We both want to work with Jim Nabors very badly, but apparently he's not with us anymore," Carney said.

Christopher Nolan Responds to Dark Knight Rises Tragedy, Expresses "Profound Sorrow"

For the time time since the deadly Colorado shooting that took 12 lives, someone associated with The Dark Knight Rises has spoken out.
And that someone is director Christopher Nolan.

“Speaking on behalf of the cast and crew of The Dark Knight Rises, I would like to express our profound sorrow at the senseless tragedy that has befallen the entire Aurora community," Nolan said, adding:
"I would not presume to know anything about the victims of the shooting, but that they were there last night to watch a movie.
"I believe movies are one of the great American art forms and the shared experience of watching a story unfold on screen is an important and joyful pastime. The movie theatre is my home, and the idea that someone would violate that innocent and hopeful place in such an unbearably savage way is devastating to me. Nothing any of us can say could ever adequately express our feelings for the innocent victims of this appalling crime, but our thoughts are with them and their families."
James Holmes is in custody for the crime, which tragically took place just miles from the 1999 school shooting incident in Columbine, Colorado.
