Beyonce's 'Why Don't You Love Me' Almost Didn't Happen, Bama Boyz Say
Beyoncé

If you've listened to Beyoncé's "Why Don't You Love Me" and inexplicably felt like you were a spy in the middle of an international conspiracy, then don't feel like you're weird. When producers the Bama Boyz, created the song, that's exactly how they felt.
The Grammy-nominated production trio of Eddie Smith, Jesse J. Rankins and Jonathan Wells are signed to Mathew Knowles' (a.k.a. Beyoncé's father) Music World Entertainment, and have worked with B for some time. In fact, the song's inspiration came from the time they spent in London at the end of her B-Day Tour.
"After the tour left, we stayed over in the UK, because we fell in love with it. It was a big thing for us, being out there, and we watch a lot of movies, so we all felt like Jason Bourne, to be quite honest with you," Rankins said. "We felt like James Bond or something. We were running around on like — this is kind of embarrassing — pretend missions in our head and we felt like we needed a theme song for it."
He said they started working on the song that would become "Why Don't You Love Me" in London, and completed it once they were back Stateside. They said that the song's structure was unusual, but luckily it ended up in the right person's hands.
"What happen was [B's sister] Solange called us and was like, 'Hey, I'm going to write a couple of records for my sister. Send me some tracks!' We had a lot of bangers that felt more like Beyoncé, but we actually put that one last on the CD because we figured 'This is not Beyoncé,' but we knew Solange would like it," Rankins said. "So we stuck that one there — but we battled with even putting it on there, because it was the last one we expected her to pick. So Solange sent it back with a song written to it, and it was the 'Why Don't You Love Me' lyrics. The song was hot!"
The Bama Boyz met in junior high and high school and linked back up in college at Alabama A&M University, where they threw parties as DJs. They eventually landed internships at Sony Music before hooking up with Mathew Knowles.
Despite their name, the group's sound doesn't necessarily scream Alabama. Their EP, Socially Awkward, is filled with music that can't readily be classified as electro, R&B or hip-hop.
"We actually like the fact that our name is the Bamaz — people say, 'Ah, they're going to sound like this.' But then we you hear [us], you're like 'What? Are they really from Alabama?' It's just like a gumbo of lots of different genres and styles."

Beyonce Says She's 'A Feminist, In A Way'
Beyoncé
Photo: Michael Caulfield/ Getty Images
Whether it's "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)" or the Destiny's Child classic "Independent Women," most of Beyoncé's catalog consists of strong female-empowerment anthems. So it's no surprise that the singer considers herself to be a feminist.
In an interview with the U.K.'s You magazine, the pop star opens up about the importance of female companionship, not needing to hide behind Sasha Fierce and her much-talked-about baby plans.
"I think I am a feminist, in a way. It's not something I consciously decided I was going to be; perhaps it's because I grew up in a singing group with other women, and that was so helpful to me," she told the magazine. "It kept me out of so much trouble and out of bad relationships. My friendships with my girls are just so much a part of me that there are things I am never going to do that would upset that bond. I never want to betray that friendship, because I love being a woman and I love being a friend to other women."
Most recently, Beyoncé has certainly made her share of female friends in the industry. In the past year, the singer has collaborated with Lady Gaga ("Video Phone" and "Telephone") and Alicia Keys ("Put It in a Love Song").
While the singer might always have female besties, there's one thing she's cut out of the picture: alter ego Sasha Fierce. Earlier this year, the pop star revealed that she "killed" Sasha, and now she said the alter-ego absence is due to her newfound self-awareness.
"I don't need Sasha so much anymore, because these days, I know who I am. It takes time to figure out who you are, and I am still discovering different things about myself. As I am exposed to different experiences, I think, 'Oh, I like this. I didn't know I liked this,' " she explained. "That's the journey of life that is so exciting. More and more, I know who I am, I know what I like, I know what I want, and that makes me feel so free."
In fact, B already has her eye on some personal life goals. "My ambition is to continue to learn about the world and to eventually have a family," she said. And while Beyoncé remained coy about when she and husband Jay-Z will expand the Carter family, she hinted that there's really "no dates, no times" to motherhood. "It will happen when I am ready."

Jennifer Hudson: I'm Thinking of Shaving My Head
"I am actually thinking about shaving my head," the singer/actress reveals to InStyle Makeover magazine. "Because I feel I've got a good structure. ... My cousin's a beautician and she's always saying, 'You could wear any hairdo.' So I'm thinking, what if I shave my hair? Not completely off, but low. I think that would be so hot. With my diamonds studs? But with a cut like that, your face has to be made up at all times."
Hudson, a spokesperson for Weight Watchers, has gone from a size 16 to a svelte size six. She reveals how she got the weight off, saying, "I was on a similar path already, except it was far stricter. And that was my downfall. I would say, 'I'm going to have skinless chicken and grilled fish and climb a mountain to work out!' ... And then I'd gain it all back. So what I did with Weight Watchers is actually more realistic. It's not a diet -- it's really a way of living that teaches you better skills. This is for the normal person, who wants to look better, or feel better, but who still wants to indulge a little bit."

New Led Zeppelin On The Way? Jason Bonham Hints At 'Jam' Sessions With Jimmy Page -- But Not Robert Plant
Jason Bonham
Photo: Larry Marano/ Getty Images
On Friday morning, mere hours before he was due to take the stage with classic rockers Foreigner at Detroit's GM Renaissance Center, drummer Jason Bonham — the son of late Led Zeppelin kitman John Bonham — told Jim Johnson and Lynne Woodison of local rock station 94.7 WCSX that he'd be an ex-member of Foreigner as of September 1. But that's not the only thing he said.
Much to the delight of Led Zeppelin fans everywhere, Bonham revealed that he's been meeting up with Led Zep guitarist Jimmy Page and bassist John Paul Jones in recent months and that they've been "trying to do some new material and writing."
It was the first time since Led Zeppelin announced they would re-form for a single performance (which happened late last year at London's O2 Arena, in honor of the late Ahmet Ertegün, who signed the band to Atlantic Records in 1969) that anyone connected to the band has confirmed publicly that new music could be on the horizon for the iconic rockers. While the bandmembers have stopped short of definitively ruling out such a reunion, singer Robert Plant insisted in the wake of last year's show that he intended to focus on promoting and touring behind his critically lauded album with bluegrass artist Alison Krauss, Raising Sand.
Not that Bonham knows what — if anything — will happen with the new material he's been working on with Page (who collaborated with pop singer Leona Lewis on an uneven version of Zep's "Whole Lotta Love" at the Olympic closing ceremonies in Beijing on Sunday night) and Jones. He said he just shows up and takes his seat behind the kit.
"I've been over [to England] a couple of times," Bonham said. "I've been working with Jimmy and John Paul and trying to do ... some new material and some writing. I don't know what it will be, but it will be something. At the moment, all I know is I have the great pleasure to go and jam with the two guys and start work on some material. When I get there, I never ask any questions. If I get a phone call to go and play, I enjoy every moment of it. Whatever it ends up as, to ever get a chance to jam with two people like that, it is a phenomenal thing for me. It's my life. It's what I've dreamed about doing."
He said it's still too early to tell what will become of these "jam" sessions, but admitted that the "possibility of doing something is in the cards. I really felt it was in the cards from the moment we walked offstage at the O2." Bonham also explained that, before there could be a Led Zep LP, "lots of politics [would need to] get ironed out," but added that recording with Zep is "something I've always wanted to do."
Bonham noticeably didn't mention frontman Plant's name during the discussion. A spokesperson for Page's management had no comment on the matter, and a spokesperson for Jones' management could not be reached by press time.

Rihanna's 'Battleship' Will Join Pantheon Of Singers' First Flicks
Taylor Swift in "Valentine's Day"
Photo: New Line Cinema
Last February, during a swing through South Korea, Rihanna told MTV Asia that she had dreams of becoming a Hollywood superstar.
"I would love to get into comedic movies," the 22-year-old said. "As well as action. I love action. I would love to play a badass one day."
Well, a badass she very well might be, as she's signed onto "Battleship," a sci-fi action flick based on the classic board game and co-starring Taylor Kitsch and Alexander Skarsgård. Of course, this isn't the first time a celebrated singer has ditched the recording studio for the soundstage. As Rihanna boards "Battleship," she joins a long line of artists-turned-actresses. Let's take a look back at the first movie roles from some our favorite singers.
Beyoncé in "Austin Powers in Goldmember"
No disrespect to the 2001 MTV movie "Carmen: A Hip Hopera," but 2002's "Goldmember" was Beyoncé's first turn on the big screen. And what a debut it was. She essentially played herself, albeit a '70s version of herself with super high hair and a handgun, but that is exactly what Beyoncé needed. The role didn't require very much in terms of acting chops and gave her the chance to get comfortable in front of the camera. Veteran comedic talent like Mike Myers, Seth Green and Michael Caine got the laughs, while Beyoncé benefited from simply sharing the frame. "Goldmember" grossed almost $300 million worldwide, and she went on to star in the critically acclaimed "Dreamgirls" a few years later.
Madonna in "A Certain Sacrifice"
Madge's first high-profile role arrived in 1985 with "Desperately Seeking Susan," but she actually shot her first movie six years earlier. The low-budget "A Certain Sacrifice," a sex-and-violence filled story set in New York's Lower East Side, languished on the shelf for years until Madonna hit the mainstream. She actually did everything she could to prevent the film's release, but "Certain Sacrifice" eventually got a home video release. Madonna might not be proud of the flick, but it certainly didn't have a negative effect on her Hollywood career. She went on to star in a slew of glitzy productions, including "Evita," for which she won a Golden Globe in 1997.
Queen Latifah in "Jungle Fever"
Latifah signed her first record deal when she was just 17. By the time she was 21, she'd also landed a small role in Spike Lee's "Jungle Fever." She went on to meatier roles in "House Party 2" and "Juice," opposite Tupac Shakur. By the new millennium, she had an Oscar nomination for "Chicago" on her résumé and a string of starring credits to her name.
Britney Spears in "Crossroads"
At perhaps the height of her fame, Spears took on a starring role in 2002's "Crossroads," a road-trip story featuring musical interludes and the talents of Dan Aykroyd and Zoe Saldana. The film was a critical dud and a box-office disappointment, and Spears has yet to get another chance at the big screen. In recent years, she's contented herself with cameo appearances in "How I Met Your Mother."
Taylor Swift in "Valentine's Day"
The country superstar appeared as herself in 2009's "Hannah Montana: The Movie," but not until this year's hit ensemble comedy, "Valentine's Day," did Swift slip into an acting role. She played a high school student who falls for her classmate, played by none other than Taylor Lautner. No word yet what her next movie project might be, but her, "Valentine's" director Garry Marshall is gearing up for his next ensemble flick, "New Year's Eve." Ms. Swift, ya interested?
Who is your favorite musician-turned-actor? Talk about it in the comments.

'Piranha 3D': The Reviews Are In!
Jerry O'Connell in "Piranha 3D"
Photo: Gene Page / Dimension
What can a critic possibly say about a film whose director describes his creative approach thusly: "I understand why James Cameron in 'Avatar' didn't want to make the 3-D gimmicky, and he was right. But we are making a piranha-attacking-spring-break movie, so we are going to go for the huge on-the-screen effects and fish attacking the audience."
That's how Alexandre Aja explained "Piranha 3D" to us earlier this year. And his movie is either the type of cinematic experience you crave — buckets of blood, tons of silicone — or the type that you find emblematic of the unraveling of Western culture. Moviegoers in both camps should note that the film is not tracking particularly well and will be lucky to gross more than $10 million over the weekend.
Yet the "Piranha 3D" reviews have been largely positive thus far; critics seem to understand that Aja wasn't trying to make an awards-season darling (despite ). Check out what the pros are saying and decide whether or not this flick is for you.
The Story
"[T]here's a lake packed with drunk hotties in bikinis they're forever taking off. There are big piranha packs swarming. A few scientists stop by to throw in lines like 'you're not going to believe this.' A few law enforcements types scream, 'Get out of the water now.' Mayhem everywhere, enough that the fake-blood and severed-limb budget was probably the film's biggest expenditure. I'd try describing the gore, but words just can't do justice to the damage a massive Mesozoic underbite, and the occasional outboard motor, can do." — Betsy Sharkey, Los Angeles Times
The Direction
"Alexandre Aja, who worked his remake magic with 2006's atmospheric 'The Hills Have Eyes,' gets it mainly right, assisted by a lively CG boost and a game cast that really gets into the spirit of things. ...
[He] exhibits little patience for such stuff as dramatic tension and tautly coiled suspense, and there are some undeniable choppy bits— but he never loses sight of the potential fun factor laid out in Pete Goldfinger and Josh Stolberg's script. Nor does he stint on the gore, with a terrific assist by the veteran effects duo of Greg Nicotero and Howard Berger, who truly outdo themselves with all those nibbled body parts, as well as added bite by creature designer Neville Page." — Michael Rechtshaffen, The Hollywood Reporter
The Performances
"The cast knows exactly what they're doing, and Elizabeth Shue and Adam Scott both walk away winners. Scott in particular seems to be having indecent fun striking a few action hero poses and reacting with droll alarms to the monster fish. Christopher Lloyd shows up for what is really just an extended cameo, but every line out of his mouth gets a laugh just because of the general lack of Lloyd in our lives lately.
Ving Rhames doesn't have a lot to do, but he goes down swinging.
O'Connell may never be able to convincingly shake off the scumbag after the enthusiastic way he and his cameraman (Paul Scheer of 'Human Giant' fame) ply their trade and earn their punishment. Even the young cast, led by Steven R. McQueen and Jessica Szohr, acquit themselves as well as possible considering how generally thin the material is."
— Drew McWeeny, HitFix
The Gore
"There's no way you can talk about the film without going gore gaga over the main attack that hits during the wet t-shirt contest. I'm relatively positive that this film used more blood than any film in film history. I'm thinking elevator scene in 'The Shining' ... times 3,000. More than that though was the crazy awesome gore by [effects studio] K.N.B. There's crazy awesome make-up effects here that just don't stop. For every moment that the CG fish get on your nerves, there's six gore gags by K.N.B. that are just epic." — Harry Knowles, Ain't It Cool News
The Bottom Line
"[H]ere, in the best/worst traditions of '70s exploitation cinema, are flesh-eating fishy gore, lip-smacking nudity and lots of laugh-out-loud silliness. If you're looking for the anti-establishment message found in the John Sayles' scripted, Roger Corman-produced 'Jaws' rip-off, you will be disappointed. However, the re-make's cheesy, eye-popping 3-D effects — flayed bodies, naked breasts, vomit and a severed penis are all flung out of the screen — are an authentic, affectionate throwback to cheapo Cormanesque excess."
— Nigel Floyd, Time Out London

Usher Gets Steamy In 'There Goes My Baby' Video
Usher's "There Goes My Baby"
Photo: LaFace/ Jive
Usher has taken on critics who say he's lost his swagger. And with a new video for his single "There Goes My Baby," the singer continues to push back at detractors who dare to suggest he's slipped.
His last single, the Will.I.Am-produced "OMG," is still riding high on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, currently resting comfortably in the #3 slot.
And now, he's pushing his next number with a video for the slow-burning ballad "There Goes My Baby." Released on Tuesday (July 13), the clip features Usher and his leading lady trading sweaty moves under a desert sun.
In the opening scene, Usher has his back to the camera as the sun rises just over his right shoulder. The R&B crooner, sporting a black tank top and dark jeans, slowly pulls his love interest closer toward him in the next scene, and then ditches his tee as he sings to her.
"There goes my baby," he sings on the chorus. "Loving everything you do/ Ooh girl, look at you." As the song's climax begins, the pair unite once again and exchange kisses as the sun fades.
"There Goes My Baby" is the latest from Usher's Raymond v. Raymond, which the singer recently announced would be made available in two separate extended editions next month. Versus will feature eight new songs, including "DJ Got Us Fallin' in Love," a Pitbull-assisted number that premiered on the singer's website earlier this month. Usher will also release Raymond v. Raymond (The Deluxe Edition). That edition of the album will include tracks from Versus, as well as material from the original version of Raymond v. Raymond that had initially leaked online prior to his album's official release and wasn't included on the retail set.

Justin Bieber Catches Philanthropy Fever from Mentor Usher
At his New Look Foundation's World Leadership Awards in Atlanta, GA, hosted by ET's very own Kevin Frazier, Usher continued to set a good example for Justin. The veteran artist said poetically, "Philanthropy starts in the heart. It's not hard work, it's heart-work."
Tween heartthrob Justin commented, "It's good to be here to support my big brother and mentor." Singer Ciara added, "It's about taking that large platform we've been given as entertainers and using it for more than just entertainment? It's fun when you can see somebody else smile and you can light somebody's heart."

Justin Bieber Discusses Importance Of Giving Back At Usher's Charity Event

Justin Bieber currently has a lot on his plate. He's on tour. He's working on a book and a movie. He's prepping the release of his next single, "U Smile." And he just wrapped shooting his cameo on "CSI." But that doesn't mean he isn't taking time to give back.
MTV News caught up with the teen star on Friday night at Usher's New Look Foundation's first World Leadership Awards in Atlanta. He was excited to use his celebrity to bring attention to the charity, as well as his voice to bring some tunes to the party.
"You know, I'm really excited to be here to support Usher, my mentor, and his New Look Foundation. I'm here [and] I'm performing tonight. I'm also helping out another charity," he shared on the red carpet. "It's called Pencils of Promise. It's all about giving back and helping out kids that need education. It's really important that I'm able to help out other kids. I'm a kid myself, so it means a lot to me."
While he tweeted his intention to release "U Smile" as a single very soon, at the event, he kept his plans rather vague. "Musically, the next thing you're gonna hear from me is I might be putting out a single in the next couple months," he said. "I'm always making hits."
Bieber also recently added a new job to his résumé. He will be the latest celebrity face for Proactiv acne treatment. "I'm definitely someone who suffers from acne," he says on the Proactiv website. "My parents got acne when they were growing up. And I'm determined to keep myself clear. If I got a face full of breakouts, I would definitely feel really self-conscious and not wanna do photo shoots, not wanna be singing."

Ke$ha Has 'Learned A Lot' From Rihanna On Tour

Rihanna is bringing her Last Girl on Earth Tour to Madison Square Garden on Thursday night (August 12), and that means opening act Ke$ha is feeling particularly nervous. Why? Well, it's Madison Square Garden!
"I'm actually a little petrified, to be honest. It's a landmark in my career, and it's just an epic venue. ... I'm just really excited, and I'm gonna try to kill it!" she told MTV News. "It definitely means a lot for me to be playing there, especially with Rihanna, 'cause she's so incredible. It makes me feel like I'm finally arriving here!"
The girls kicked off the tour earlier this summer, and the "Tik Tok" singer said she and Rihanna have had some fun times on the road together. "It's amazing! She's just a badass," she said. "I saw her yesterday, and she spanked me — always keeping me on my toes. She's the sickest."
With all that time together, have the girls discussed working together? "I would love to. I mean, it's kind of been tossed around," she said. "There's not really much time that we've spent writing and stuff on this tour, because it's been so crazy, but it's definitely an idea I'm not opposed to."
Ke$ha said she's learning tons from Rihanna on tour. "I don't know what she would be learning from me, aside from how to look like a maniac, but I definitely learned a lot from her," she said. "I've only been performing pop music for under a year, so I'm relatively new to the arena thing. It's terrifying, so I really do, every night, watch her, and she's so graceful and so sweet and so badass."
Her best advice? "She just always has such a good attitude. You just have to own it!"

Beyonce Says She's 'A Feminist, In A Way'
