Shakira Goes 'Loca' In New Guerrilla-Style Video
Shakira in the "Loca" music video
Photo: Epic
For nearly two decades now, either due to her multinational leanings (the Colombian's music is as indebted to Latin American rhythms as it is to Arabic dance, Euro disco and red-white-and-blue rock) or because she is sort of insane (see last year's She Wolf album), Shakira has managed to carve out her own, rather indefinable niche in pop music.
On Wednesday (September 29), she premiered the video for "Loca," the first single off her upcoming Sale el Sol album (due October 19). And while it's not exactly a unique artistic endeavor — it echoes sentiments already expressed by the likes of Matt & Kim (in their "Lessons Learned" clip) and Erykah Badu (in her firestormy "Window Seat" vid) — it's still undoubtedly her ... mostly because none of her high-gloss pop contemporaries would ever dare attempt something like it.
Shot run-and-gun style in Barcelona, "Loca" follows Shakira and her crew — which includes a few cameramen and, somewhat improbably, British rapper Dizzee Rascal — on a madcap adventure that includes roller-skating, public wardrobe changes, motorcycle cruising, an illicit hop in a public fountain (a move that landed her in hot, uh, water with local authorities) and, of course, plenty of hip shaking. It's a decidedly guerrilla endeavor that appears to have been done on a budget hovering around zero (aside from a performance scene, the entire thing appears to have been shot on handheld cameras). The Britneys, Beyoncés and Gagas would probably never make something like this ... and yet, here it works, mostly because, well, it just sort of seems like the kind of thing Shakira would do.
For that alone, she deserves to be praised. Because unlike Matt & Kim (or Erykah Badu, really), Shakira has plenty to lose. Her albums are big events, things that resonate across continents, and it would be rather easy (or, at least, expected) for her to come out of the gate with a big-budget, glossy pop video. Instead, we get "Loca," which is none of those things, and is probably better because of that.
And though it features some near-nudity and some illegal activity, the thing that resonates most about the "Loca" video is that none of that bad behavior is played up for shock value. Instead, it all helps match the kinetic, herky-jerky energy of the song itself. "Loca" is the rare video that doesn't attempt to outshine the song it's based on. Instead, it complements it. This is a very lively song, after all, so what better way to capture that than with a very lively video?
There's a calculated madness to the "Loca" video, a vibrant, unchained energy, the kind very few artists can conjure up, no matter how big the budget. And, come to think of it, that's a pretty accurate way of summing up Shakira's entire career. It's called synergy, people.
What do you think of Shakira's "Loca" video? Share your reviews in the comments.

'Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps' Wakes Weekend Box Office
Michael Douglas and Shia LaBeouf in "Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps"
Photo: 20th Century Fox
If money never sleeps, nobody told that to Oliver Stone. The Academy Award-winning filmmaker withdrew from his old "Wall Street" savings account and subsequently delivered a first-place success in the form of "Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps."
In the sequel, Michael Douglas reprises his iconic role of greedy moneymaker Gordon Gekko, while "Transformers" star Shia LaBeouf joins the team as Gekko's new protégé and would-be son-in-law. Despite a serious delay that pushed "Money Never Sleeps" from its original spring 2010 release date to this past weekend, Stone's latest delivered a solid $19 million opening for 20th Century Fox, proving once and for all that greed is good — at least when you have Stone and Douglas on your side.
The "Wall Street" sequel may have won first place, but it didn't steal the entire spotlight at the weekend box office. "Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole" was a real hoot in second place with $16.3 million, proving that director Zack Snyder can win over a young audience just as deftly as he succeeds with the older geek crowd. But the bank robbers of Ben Affleck's "The Town" gave "The Owls of Ga'Hoole" a run for their money, losing second place by a margin of less than $300,000 in its second weekend in theaters.
Newcomer "You Again" didn't make quite the same splash, landing in fifth place with $8.3 million. But the comedy starring Betty White and Kristen Bell cost only around $20 million to produce, so the film's small opening isn't as disappointing as it could be.
Upcoming Releases
Director David Fincher wants you to accept his friend request in "The Social Network," while Chloe Moretz sinks her teeth into horror fans with "Let Me In." Renee Zellweger and Bradley Cooper's "Case 39" is another thriller worth investigating.

'Green Lantern' Star Ryan Reynolds Talks Sequel Possibilities
Ryan Reynolds
Photo: Getty Images
Aside from the buzz about Ryan Reynolds' claustrophobia-inducing performance in the upcoming thriller "Buried" — for which Reynolds filmed all his scenes within the confines of a wooden coffin — the news about the actor has been almost entirely focused on his superheroic efforts in "Wolverine," a possible Deadpool spin-off and "Green Lantern."
When MTV News caught up with him recently, we couldn't help but ask about possible "Lantern" sequels, as well as which comic book authors he found most helpful in getting into the character of Hal Jordan.
"It's a pretty big universe; there's a lot to explore," Reynolds said of the "Green Lantern" sequel possibilities. "There's a lot to explore with Hal, then without him. You could do a couple movies with Hal and then move on to Guy Gardner or Kyle Rayner or any of those guys."
More "Lantern" without Hal Jordan — and Reynolds? Surely the busy actor isn't ready to give up his ring that quickly.
"Look, I'm saying in success, let's not put the cart before the horse," Reynolds said, emphasizing the fact that the first movie has to come out and be a hit before he can start talking about sequels. "In success, you do another movie, you do two, great. I think [the idea of two sequels] is fantastic, but the first one has got to land and people have got to see it and have to have that appetite for a sequel."
Fair enough. Regarding his go-to source for "Lantern" research, Reynolds cited famed DC writer/ current Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns.
"Geoff Johns is it," Reynolds said. "His 'Secret Origins' book was the one I kind of used as the bible for this. It's an easy thing to reference, because it's an origin story as well. That was the one I sort of stuck to."

'Borat' to Play Freddie Mercury on the Big Screen
The currently untitled drama will focus on the years leading up to Queen's revered performance at 1985's Live Aid concert event. The movie is being developed by GK Films in partnership with Robert De Niro and Jane Rosenthal's Tribeca Productions, and Queen Films.
"Queen is one of the greatest rock bands of all time, and a music brand all unto itself," says GK Film's Graham King. "Freddie Mercury was an awe-inspiring performer, so with Sacha in the starring role coupled with Peter [Morgan]'s screenplay and the support of Queen, we have the perfect combination to tell the real story behind their success."

'Black Swan' Was Custom-Made For Natalie Portman
Natalie Portman in "Black Swan"
Photo: Fox Searchlight
Director Darren Aronofsky's "Black Swan" doesn't hit theaters until December, but many of the moviegoers who were lucky enough to see the film on the festival circuit are already predicting Oscar nominations for lead actress Natalie Portman. As Aronofsky explains it, it's not difficult to understand why Portman's portrayal of troubled ballerina Nina Sayers is getting so much praise — after all, the role was constructed for Portman from the very beginning.
"Like the way we kind of knew that Mickey Rourke was going to be in 'The Wrestler' and we were able to construct the material for him, Natalie had been attached to the film for eight or nine years; so when we were thinking about it, we were thinking about Natalie," Aronofsky told MTV News about developing Portman's character. "First and foremost, we just wanted to make the character work and make sense of the character. Then Natalie, through her own work, was able to get to a place where she was able to play it."
Indeed, "Black Swan" buzz has been building for quite some time, thanks in large part to the electric chemistry between Portman and co-star Mila Kunis. But once upon a time, rumors floated around that Portman herself would portray both her own character and Kunis' — the same way that Odette and Odile are typically played by the same ballerina in "Swan Lake." And Aronofsky himself won't exactly deny that rumor.
"There were lots of different versions about what was going on," the director confessed. "It's been a long, long evolution."
In the end, Aronofsky believes that a mixture of ingredients helped to shape Portman's profound performance, not the least of which is the actress herself.
"Having a big movie star like Natalie Portman gets you a lot of advantages," he said. "People want to like her; she's very beautiful and very youthful. That helps when you start to move things towards uncertain ground and darkness."

James McAvoy Says 'The Conspirator' Has Modern-Day Relevance
James McAvoy
Photo: MTV News
Robert Redford's "The Conspirator" premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival earlier this month. The film focuses on the fallout from the 1865 assassination of President Abraham Lincoln, but the political intrigue within could be seen as relevant to present-day politics.
In the film, which hits theaters in spring 2011, fresh-faced lawyer Frederick Aiken (James McAvoy) is charged with defending the assassination conspiracy's lone female defendant, Mary Surratt (Robin Wright); over the course of the trial, Aiken becomes increasingly convinced of Surratt's innocence. Eventually, he realizes that the imprisoned woman could be serving as bait to draw out one of the conspiracy's other central figures.
Given the tenuous political climate — not to mention the political bent of Redford's other movies, like "Lions for Lambs" — it's easy to spot the similarities between the politics of "The Conspirator" and those of the past decade. But according to McAvoy, the parallels aren't intentional.
"I think when they wrote the script, they literally just wrote the script off what happened [during the trial]," the actor told MTV News. "A lot of the dialogue was lifted from speeches that were given — my closing speech, for example, and what I say in defense of Mary Surratt [were] just lifted from what [my character actually] said.
"At the end of that, we were left with a script that was incredibly resonant and relevant and kind of walked a very clear, parallel line with stuff that's been happening [in modern times], but that was only because it was true to itself; it wasn't designed to do that," he continued.
McAvoy noted that Redford's directorial ability resulted in a subtle presentation of the parallels between the politics of the mid-19th century and those of the early 21st.
"I don't think Robert felt that we shouldn't tell the story because it's resonant and relevant," he said. "What he did say is that we shouldn't be trying to look for the parallels and highlighting them, because it will be abundantly clear to the audience if they want to see them. And if they don't want to see them, they'll just get the story of something incredibly important that happened in their country anyway."

Justin Bieber Gets 'Kudos' For His 'CSI' Cameo
Justin Bieber on "CSI"
Photo: CBS
Justin Bieber might be one of a handful of pop stars to make a cameo on "CSI," but he has certainly left his mark on the cast and the crew of the hit CBS crime drama. When Bieber hits the small screen Thursday night (September 23) for his performance as Jason McCann, he will certainly leave fans stunned by his acting chops, one of the show's producers told MTV News.
"I thought that he did a really good job. We only had Justin for a day, for 10 and a half hours, and he had a lot of work crammed into those 10 and a half hours," executive producer Carol Mendelsohn said about the first of Bieber's two appearances on the show. "And he had one super big scene, and the scene was an interrogation scene in the police department with [actor] George Eads, and George actually took Justin under his wing."
Why did the veteran "CSI" actor feel that Biebs was worthy of his mentorship? "George said that when he was just starting out, Tom Selleck took him under his wing, so I think he tried to return that kindness, and he really had some time to work the material," she explained. "We built in some time, and I thought that scene was really good, and Justin had a couple of scenes where he didn't have a lot of dialogue or no dialogue and then two pretty heavy scenes."
Noting that Bieber did a "really good job" with the heavier work, Mendelsohn added that Bieber has some acting chops. "It's hard for any accomplished, mature actor to come on the set and fall right into character and do your work, so kudos to Justin," she said.
Are you planning to watch Justin's "CSI" debut? Let us know in the comments!

Ne-Yo 'Doesn't Know What To Do' With Songs He Wrote For Michael Jackson
Ne-Yo
Photo: Getty Images
While producer Rodney Jerkins is expecting to begin work on an album of unreleased Michael Jackson music, Ne-Yo, on the other hand, isn't sure what to do with the material he wrote for the late King of Pop before MJ's death last year. The R&B singer/songwriter told Australia's Daily Telegraph that he was sending Jackson three or four drafts a week prior to his unexpected death. More than a year later, Ne-Yo now still stands at a crossroads as he contemplates what to do with the songs he created specifically for the one and only MJ.
"I can't sell them on to someone else, as that would be disrespectful, but I also think it might be disrespectful to bring them out myself. So I don't know, I'll sit on them and wait. It's definitely quality music but they were songs written absolutely for Michael Jackson."
According to the newspaper, Jackson hand-picked Ne-Yo as well as Black Eyed Peas producer Will.I.Am to work on his comeback album. It was only a matter of time before Ne-Yo was met face to face with his musical idol.
"I felt quite bad, as I'd allowed what the media had done to his name and image to have me thinking, 'OK, what's this about to be? Is this going to be weird?' " he recalled. "But he walked in a black suit and some sunglasses and was a genuine, nice guy. And it wasn't because he wanted something from me, he just had no reason other than to be a decent guy."
During their meeting, the duo talked about the current state of the music industry, something Ne-Yo says Jackson wasn't too pleased with. "He believed what was wrong with a lot of music today is that people aren't singing about anything. If it's not about a party or sex then it's about money, and there's not really much to that."
Ne-Yo, who has penned hits for Beyoncé and Rihanna as well as himself, explained that the entertainer wanted songs that were "melodic and meaningful." "Michael told me the melodies needed to be the ones you heard once and could sing back, and the lyrics needed to have meaning and depth," he said.
Unfortunately, Ne-Yo's submissions weren't recorded by Jackson, because the singer put his album on hold to rehearse for his This Is It concert series at London's 02 Arena before passing away.
But Ne-Yo has hope that one day he'll figure out what to do with the Jackson tracks. "Hopefully the songs will see the light of day, it just has to be the right way," he said.
What do you think Ne-Yo should do with the songs he created for Michael Jackson? Should he keep them locked up or let someone else give them a try? Let us know what you think below!

Singer Bruno Mars Arrested for Alleged Cocaine Possession
According to the arrest report, Bruno, whose legal name is Peter Hernandez, was taken in by law enforcement around 1:50 a.m. after a bathroom attendant at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino told a security officer that there was a gentleman in the restroom who he thought was doing drugs. The attendant explained to the security officer that he could see a "male with a striped red shirt with a baggy of white powder substance." Security than confiscated the substance that was discovered to be cocaine, and Bruno was placed in a holding cell before being taking in by LVPD.
The report also claims that when approached by the police officer, Bruno "admitted he did a foolish thing and has never used drugs before." The case against Bruno is under review and charges have not yet been filed. At the time he was released from custody, he was given a court return date of November 18, 2010.

Beyonce Says She's 'A Feminist, In A Way'
Beyoncé
Photo: Michael Caulfield/ Getty Images
Whether it's "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)" or the Destiny's Child classic "Independent Women," most of Beyoncé's catalog consists of strong female-empowerment anthems. So it's no surprise that the singer considers herself to be a feminist.
In an interview with the U.K.'s You magazine, the pop star opens up about the importance of female companionship, not needing to hide behind Sasha Fierce and her much-talked-about baby plans.
"I think I am a feminist, in a way. It's not something I consciously decided I was going to be; perhaps it's because I grew up in a singing group with other women, and that was so helpful to me," she told the magazine. "It kept me out of so much trouble and out of bad relationships. My friendships with my girls are just so much a part of me that there are things I am never going to do that would upset that bond. I never want to betray that friendship, because I love being a woman and I love being a friend to other women."
Most recently, Beyoncé has certainly made her share of female friends in the industry. In the past year, the singer has collaborated with Lady Gaga ("Video Phone" and "Telephone") and Alicia Keys ("Put It in a Love Song").
While the singer might always have female besties, there's one thing she's cut out of the picture: alter ego Sasha Fierce. Earlier this year, the pop star revealed that she "killed" Sasha, and now she said the alter-ego absence is due to her newfound self-awareness.
"I don't need Sasha so much anymore, because these days, I know who I am. It takes time to figure out who you are, and I am still discovering different things about myself. As I am exposed to different experiences, I think, 'Oh, I like this. I didn't know I liked this,' " she explained. "That's the journey of life that is so exciting. More and more, I know who I am, I know what I like, I know what I want, and that makes me feel so free."
In fact, B already has her eye on some personal life goals. "My ambition is to continue to learn about the world and to eventually have a family," she said. And while Beyoncé remained coy about when she and husband Jay-Z will expand the Carter family, she hinted that there's really "no dates, no times" to motherhood. "It will happen when I am ready."

Britney Spears Responds To Sexual Harassment Suit
Britney Spears
Photo: Christopher Polk/ Getty Images
On Wednesday, a bodyguard named Fernando Flores, formerly in the employ of Britney Spears, filed a lawsuit against the singer alleging that she not only sexually harassed him but also abused her two young sons Sean Preston and Jayden James. Eager to clear the air, Spears responded to the suit and the allegations today via her official website.
"This lawsuit is another unfortunate situation where someone is trying to take advantage of the Spears family and make a name for himself," the post reads. "The Department of Children and Family Services conducted a proper investigation surrounding Mr. Flores' accusations and have closed the case without any further action. Ms. Spears and her attorneys have every expectation that this matter will be dismissed by the courts."
Prior to the formal lawsuit (which was filed in Los Angeles Superior Court on Wednesday), Flores had previously filed a complaint with the Department of Children and Family Services that accused Spears of physically abusing her two young sons in the bodyguard's presence, including one incident where she supposedly struck one of them with a belt.
Kevin Federline, Spears' ex-husband and father to both Sean Preston and Jayden James, also denied the child abuse accusations put forth by Flores. Through his attorney, Federline declared the allegations "baseless," according to The Associated Press. Spears — who at one point lost custody of her two kids — now shares joint custody with Federline.
Flores, who claims Spears would often expose herself to him and engage in sexual acts while in his presence, is seeking damages for the alleged sexual harassment.

Guillermo Del Toro Says 'The Fall' Vampires 'Don't Sparkle'
Guillermo del Toro
Photo: MTV News
Guillermo del Toro is a jolly fellow. You'll be 20 minutes into a conversation filled with jokey repartee and his self-deprecating asides, and you'll think: This is the guy who unleashed a swarm of killer cockroaches on a city full of children in "Mimic"?
Then, suddenly, a fuse will blow in the studio, and as your crew scrambles to re-light the set, del Toro will say, with a mix of charm and do-not-cross-me gravity, "My DP would punch you!"
But his director of photography is nowhere to be seen, nor are plague-laden roaches, and all soon returns to normal. Del Toro is here to chat about "The Fall," the second book in his trilogy (co-written with Chuck Hogan), about a parasitic epidemic turning a city's population into blood-sucking vampires. It's grim material, no doubt, but the director-turned-novelist talks ebulliently, almost from start to finish, about the book, its influences and its development.
He's got a right to be happy. Like the first installment, "The Fall" became a bestseller, thanks to robust pre-orders before it even hit shelves Tuesday. And, having dealt with a heartbreaking, years-long struggle to make "The Hobbit," del Toro is energized to be temporarily working outside the Hollywood machine, writing fiction about a subject he's been obsessed with since the age of 7.
The Oscar nominee is getting set to dive back into moviemaking, of course, and is deep into preproduction on his 3-D collaboration with James Cameron, "At the Mountains of Madness."
That, too, is a project he's been dreaming about for decades. Yet to hear del Toro talk about "The Fall" is to realize the special place fiction holds in his creative heart. And it doesn't hurt that the book is one kick-ass page-turner.
MTV: I'm, first of all, curious about the process. You've written screenplays with other people; you've now written two books with Chuck Hogan. How do those two processes differ, if at all?
Guillermo del Toro: It's much better than writing solo. Writing the books is very similar to writing the screenplays with collaborators. For the books, we get together for what Chuck terms "a four-day breakfast." We talk and eat, and eat and talk. Eventually, we figure out everything we want about the book, we go away, we generate a 30-page outline, and then we call dibs: "I want this section. I want that section." I think I get all the fun sections. I write them and send them to him, and when I get his sections, I realize he got a lot of fun sections, and I get envious and rewrite them. He rewrites my stuff, and we go from there. It becomes a single voice.
MTV: There's more of an action vibe in the second book than in the first. Was that one of the goals, to mix much more action into your horror story?
Del Toro: Chuck says that we got together on the first one and took our Legos and created the city and the characters, and on the second, we finally get to play with them, and on the third, we're going to destroy it.
MTV: The vampires in the trilogy are unique compared to other depictions of vampires in popular culture in that vampirism is a disease. Where'd the idea come from? Any specific sources?
Del Toro: During the Age of Enlightenment, there were plagues in Europe and vampiric panics that led to ransacking of graveyards and desecration of corpses. There was mass hysteria about vampires. I thought that in this age of GPS and iPhones, the only thing that reverts us to primitive fear is a viral epidemic. Immediately, you see people wearing masks and not opening mail for fear of anthrax. And if you talk to these people, most of them have no idea how anything is transmitted. It's very superstitious. I thought it would be great to recreate vampires biologically, explain how they work, and make them scary again. I've been reading vampiric folklore since I was 7. I know more about vampires than I know about my cousins.
MTV: What is the lure of telling this story in book form, as opposed to, say, in comic books, video games or as a TV series?
Del Toro: The only way to really track the epidemic was the long-arc form. You could have done it as a TV series or books. The freedom you get by doing it as books is you get to establish the characters and the world the way you want it. You don't get any notes from studio executives and TV executives. You don't test it with an audience. You don't have to get feedback. You don't mind about ratings. You do everything you want. It was a liberating thing to do it that way. I found it to be, personally, as a fat human being, an escape pod from really constrictive screenplay writing, especially within the studio environment. I really love writing fiction. It's like an amusement park for me. I have no end of fun.
MTV: And it's an excuse to have four-day breakfasts with your friends.
Del Toro: Everything I do, I feel like I'm a very well-financed child. I just do everything I dreamt of doing as a kid, and I get to do it with the friends I like. Someone puts us in a room together, and we build a city that is crazy, and we get in costumes and play, and then you have dinner with those people. It's like camp for abnormal kids. I'm deeply abnormal, so I am very happy.
MTV: When the trilogy concludes, will that ending be final or does the possibility exist for the stories of any of these characters to continue?
Del Toro: We don't want to return to it. We really want to close it on the third book. I would love to continue to do a short story now and then about the world or the characters, but with the novel form, we will close on the third one. The arc ends.
MTV: I don't need to tell you how popular vampire fiction is these days. In your interactions with fans, in readings and whatnot, have you found a lot of overlap with fans of "Twilight" or "The Vampire Diaries," or is it very much a separate crowd?
Del Toro: There is room for fans of vampire romance to look for the nastiest vampires. Our trilogy is dedicated to a parasitic feeding entity. These guys don't sparkle. They won't take you to dinner. You will be dinner. They are mouths with a stomach and a collective brain — the terrifying inhuman aspect of vampirism. The other aspect is perfectly genuine, and I don't put it down, but it's an area I have no interest in. I'm not attracted to the Byronian badboy that vampires can be. That's an analogy I don't pursue. But we do find people that are reading both types of fiction and enjoying it. Diversity is the key to happiness.
MTV: When the first book came out, you said you talked with Fox about a TV show, and it didn't work out. This time around, have you tried to go back to the networks or cable?
Del Toro: When the first one was on the bestseller list, we got a lot of calls. Some of the people we pitched it to originally called back. We don't want to turn it into anything. We want to wait until the third book because we don't want to think about it any other way than just books. You don't want to contaminate it. We got approached by studios wanting to turn them into movies. I don't feel comfortable with that. I don't know if I ever will. We're going to do stuff in the third book that is pretty hardcore. I don't know if we'd be able to preserve it. But, look, my favorite stuff is on TV right now.
"Breaking Bad" is exceptionally good. At my household, we consider "Dexter" a family show. Partnering up with somebody like that would be fantastic.

Lyfe Jennings Reportedly Sentenced To Three Years In Jail

R&B singer Lyfe Jennings is heading to jail for three years, according to reports. The artist was due to perform in Seattle on Tuesday, but the show was abruptly canceled before Jennings was sentenced to three and a half years in Atlanta on Wednesday (September 22), according to Seattle Weekly.
The sentence stems from an altercation Jennings had with the mother of his child in 2008. The singer kicked down the door of a house in Smyrna, Georgia, in an attempt to find Joy Pound and later fired a gun outside. Smyrna police saw a red 2005 Corvette fleeing the scene, and Jennings was caught after a high-speed chase that ended when the singer smashed the vehicle. He refused a sobriety test. Jennings was handed misdemeanor charges of criminal trespass, discharging a firearm near a public highway and refusal to take a DUI test, in addition to two felony counts of attempting to elude an officer and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
Jennings' label offered no comment by press time.
On Tuesday, Jennings posted a vague message on his Twitter account announcing he would no longer be writing on the micro-blogging site.
"This will be my last post. To everyone who gave me a chance I am forever in your debt. I have had a fabulous career because of you. All I can say in parting is that I have been honest with yaw. I didn't sugarcoat a word didn't hold back a single sylible of my life from yaw," Jennings said. "I've lived a hundred lives in these 6 yrs so I not only won't, I don't have the right to complain. I would like to think that I've changed lives by changing my own, tho I can't be sure. But one thing I am sure of is God gives and takes away in measure. He is fair, just and forever. Amen from aman... Smile, it's contageous:)"
Jennings was sentenced to 10 years for felony arson before gaining acclaim after his wins at the famed amateur night at New York's Apollo Theater. His 2004 debut, Lyfe 268-192, went platinum, and he's known for hits like "S.E.X." and "Never Never Land." He released his latest LP, I Still Believe, in August, a project he dubbed his "final" album. In a press release for the album, Jennings explained that the title reflects his resilience despite his personal trials.
"It's tragic; I think I have a horribly charmed life," Jennings said. "But I think God puts me through stuff and keeps me there so I can talk about it."

Britney Spears Makes First Appearance Since Lawsuit
Britney Spears out in Los Angeles on Thursday
Photo: Fame Pictures
After news broke that Britney Spears' former bodyguard Fernando Flores is suing her for sexual harassment, Spears made her first public appearance on Thursday. Rocking a big smile, skinny jeans, heels and a white man-tailored ruffled top, the pop star made her way through sunny Los Angeles just as the story of the sexual-harassment lawsuit was making waves in the media.
According to the suit, Flores claims Spears "made repeated unwanted sexual advances," exposed herself to him and engaged in "numerous sexual acts" in front of him. On her website, Spears posted a statement denying Flores' allegations. "This lawsuit is another unfortunate situation where someone is trying to take advantage of the Spears family and make a name for himself."
And in an interview later that day, Flores told TMZ that he is "standing up for what I believe is right."
Flores has also accused the singer of child abuse (including an incident where he says Spears allegedly whipped one of her sons with a belt), but Spears' ex-husband Kevin Federline, speaking through his lawyer, declared those accusations "baseless."
While it is unknown how much Flores is suing Spears for, he is seeking damages based around the sexual harassment incidents and for "intentional infliction of emotional distress." Attorney Michael Bononi, who is not involved in the case, told MTV News that the burden of proof will be on Flores.
"What he's gonna have to show in making these allegations is that he was subjected to a hostile work environment," Bononi said. "And it's gonna have to be hostile in two ways: one, that a reasonable person similarly situated would have been offended by the conduct and secondly that he was actually offended by the conduct."

Fat Calves
I have fat calves.
I have fat calves and I have a problem buying tall boots in the Fall/Winter because of them.
Even when I'm skinny, I have fat calves. I've always had them. I remember being a size four and not being able to find boots that fit. I just have fat calves.
I told this to Mark tonight and said, "I can't even blog about it because it's embarrassing," and he said, "Own it!"
So I am. I have fat calves.
What's prompting this is that I got a pair of Hunter boots today. I thought if anything is going to fit, surely it will be these gigantic rain boots. But low and behold, I tried one on and it got stuck on my leg. I seriously thought I was going to have to cut it off. (The boot. Or the leg.) And you know, the boots are rubber, so the harder I pulled, the hotter my leg became and the tighter the boot got. When I finally pulled it off it was like "Pop!"—it was like a suction.
I'm so bummed out.
I have fat calves.
I have fat calves.
I have fat calves and I hate them.

Justin Bieber's Triple-Threat VMA Performance: Making The Show
Justin Bieber rehearses for the 2010 VMAs
Photo: John Shearer/ WireImage
Before Justin Bieber even hit the stage for rehearsal at L.A. Live on the Friday before the VMAs, you could feel the energy in the air. And once the teen pop star actually began rehearsing, it became clear Bieber's Video Music Awards performance would be influenced by the "A Hard Day's Night"-inspired VMA promo he shot.
Bieber first did a rough run-through of a medley of his hits "U Smile," "Baby" and "Somebody to Love." Then he stepped out of a chauffeured red-and-white '57 Chevy, followed by a gaggle of female fans — an obvious reference to the Beatles. When Justin took to the stage, he wanted to make sure he got everything right: from the way his drum kit sounded to the way his dancers hit their marks to the look of his leather jackets for the show.
With the girls surrounding the stage as they watched Bieber rehearse, the driven, hard-working teen proved he would be hands-on and involved in every detail. What was perhaps most surprising was that his outdoor rehearsal went virtually unnoticed by anyone other than those involved with the practice session.
While Bieber seemed to be nailing an engaging first VMA performance, Kim Kardashian could be heard teasing about their "romance" in a hilarious voiceover.
As the hour-and-a-half-long rehearsal progressed, fans did eventually turn up — one even shouted to Bieber, "Follow me on Twitter!" — but the scene around the barricaded stage area remained relatively chill. Justin made sure to remind fans of one thing: "What's up, everybody? I love you!"
The rehearsal ended with Bieber at the drums, closing out "Somebody to Love," with black and red confetti falling from the sky. It remained entangled in the trees right through Sunday, when yet more confetti came down on the Best New Artist winner.

Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber, Other VMA Winners Thank Fans On Twitter
Lady Gaga after the 2010 Video Music Awards

"Woke up ... had a good breakfast ... got a smile on my face ... everyone is feeling good ... it's finally here."
"It," of course, refers to the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards, and the speaker in question is none other than "Baby" singer Justin Bieber. On Sunday, Bieber — who was nominated for Best New Artist — tweeted to his legions of Twitter followers to express his excitement over the impending awards show. "Regardless of what happens, I'm lucky to have the greatest fans ever," he wrote. "So thank you!"
By the end of the night, Bieber had more than luck and his fans on his side — he also had a Moonman to call his own.
"Wow. What?? Are you kidding. What!!?!" an ecstatic Bieber tweeted immediately following his win for Best New Artist. "Can't stop smiling!"
Bieber offered his thanks to a wide range of supporters, from his mother to his manager, Scooter Braun, to legendary martial artist and actor Chuck Norris. The singer acknowledged that he was likely leaving someone out, so he simply decided to thank "everybody."
"Biggest thank you in the world to the greatest fans in the world," he wrote. "We did it together and we are just getting started!!!"
Of course, Bieber wasn't the only musician lucky enough to leave the Nokia Theatre with a shiny new trophy. Lady Gaga, for instance, went home with a walloping eight awards, including Best Pop Video, Best Female Video and Video of the Year.
"Too much poetry tonight," Lady G tweeted, along with a photo of herself, after the show was over. "But u love u, + I love I, + we were #bornthisway."
30 Seconds to Mars frontman Jared Leto was equally grateful after winning the Best Rock Video award for "Kings and Queens." "An unforgettable and amazing night," he tweeted. "We are the luckiest band in the world to be able to share our lives with all of you."
Sadly, not everyone was able to claim victory at the VMAs. Drake, who lost Best Hip-Hop Video to Eminem, ended the night with his head held high despite the loss. "Thank you for all the love tonight," he told his Twitter followers. "I had the time of my life."
Hayley Williams of Paramore had a similar outlook, despite losing Best Rock Video and three other awards for her collaboration with B.o.B on "Airplanes." "Even though we didn't win, our time was up on that stage," Williams tweeted. "We had the best time performing. So we still won!"
