Japanese man boils himself alive

A 71-year-old man cooked himself in hot water this week in Yamaga. Crouching in a huge black cooking pot over an open fire, Kenzo Koya was performing a Shinto ritual called Yutate Kagura. The event is a form of nature worship thought to date as far back as 1212, and Koya has been climbing into the pot for several decades -- but says he has suffered no injuries. While other areas of Japan also honor Yutate Kagura, the ritual usually involves splashing hot water on bamboo leaves and shaking them. Yamaga is the only town where a man climbs into the pot.read more
